Space travel is the most exciting adventure for humanity, but in an irony of history we may stop ourselves from going into space the more we do it. With every rocket launched we are creating a deadly trap for mankind.

If we get desperate enough, it might be quicker and more cost effective to guide a metallic asteroid into a near miss. If we chose the right asteroid and lined it up properly in relation to the moon, the debris would impact and make craters, effectively making the asteroid a sweeping magnet that then proceeds out of our orbit. If it does get to that worst case scenario then any mission we send to clean it up gets riskier each moment it's up there. Going straight through the shell of debris to collect an asteroid means less time spent in the debris with a chance of contributing to the pile. Much higher return on investment if successful.

    • c r

      c r

      22 dagen geleden

Sounds like a great idea in theory! But don't forget, we don't want to send satellites or such vacuum to a black hole when we only used it one time, it will be expensive to even just send it to the orbit, it's not worth it. Also, the nearest black hole is 25,000 light-years away, which I believe is out of our reach (not even in our solar system!) Right now we only have the tech to just have a vision of a black hole. We have a long way to go, probably will already be trapped in earth way before this. It's good thinking though!!!! Maybe we shall think about reusable vacuums or sth. Just send it back to earth?

  66. Blersh

    25 dagen geleden

3:15 but it cannot be a low earth orbit one, because the faster you move, the higher you apoapsis (highest point in orbit) is. If it’s a low earth orbit debris piece, it will be about 50m/s of speed difference than the satellite, meaning destroying it, but not with that much force. Or I’m dumb...

It's good thoughts, but the question is how to actually turn junk into something reusable. Imagine try converting the trash we throw everyday into new food/ other objects. Very hard right? We need specific chemicals and a factory to do that ( Possibly more than one facilities, hopefully I'm not using the wrong word here). Imagine how hard it will be to send a factory to space.
