This video is part of a series about climate change supported by Breakthrough Energy - a coalition founded by Bill Gates, that is working to expand clean-energy investment and support the innovations that will lead the world to net-zero carbon emissions.

Climate Change is just too much. There is never any good news. Only graphs that get more and more red and angry. Almost every year breaks some horrible record, from the harshest heat waves to the most rapid Glacier melt. It’s endless and relentless.
We have known for decades that rapid Climate Change is being caused by the release of Greenhouse Gases. But instead of reducing them, in 2019 the world was emitting 50% more CO2 than in the year 2000. And emissions are still rising. Why is that? Why is it so hard to just stop emitting these gases?

Kurzgesagt - In a Nutshell Missing Conventional Agriculture: in addition to poisoning the soil the water and our food, plowing the soil releases CO2 and moisture (H2O) from the soil to the atmosphere(Animal confinement also is bad).... Even if we stop emitting CO2 into the atmosphere with clean energy what was released from CO2 during all this time would still be there. The solution would be to capture CO2 for the soil, this technology has been around for a long time, the system of a forest ... ragriculture regeneration and forest gardening are revolutionary proposals. These implications are not to be afraid of. We have to adapt. We have to grow or be killed. It is not a safe world, greed has driven ppl to extremes. For these negative desires, we will be competing for survival. To live comfortably, when the most comfort is laying on a hammock in the wilderness on the beach, at ur finger tips..... We are fully challenged, as we speak, these same implication has left the reptiles, the dino days to stay fittest.

How much would it emit to extract the raw materials to build the solar panels, batteries and wind turbines we need? Which of these materials would be limited, hard to get to or in short supply? Some scientis of the world say in 2050 we need to drop Co2 by zero. It’s a little complicated to get CO2 down to zero unless with ultimate kill of all population. People breathe CO2 out and the trees and the plants turn it into oxygen for us.

    • Kloko Loko

      Kloko Loko

      6 uur geleden

Our breathing is carbon neutral because plants you eat once captured CO2 from air and plants that will you eat tomorrow are already capturing CO2 from air. Problems are animals and especially cows and sheeps that emit CH4 gas when they burp because CH4 is 28 times stronger greenhouse gas than CO2..

Not going to happen. People won’t even upgrade their light bulbs from incandescent to led. People are still going to travel by plane. It’s a necessity. By raising ticket prices you’re targeting the poor. Planes travel can be more efficient with larger plane capacity and with less flights. New ICE vehicle sales should be banned by 2025. Absolutely no excuse not to. The technology is there. Issue with that is the legacy auto manufacturers failed to keep up. This would put them out of business. Home solar panels should be subsidized. People should stop buying McMansion homes. But the instagram ladies love that. High speed rail should connect all major cities in the US. China does it. Why can’t we?

@BookDamage From what and how you write I can tell you never had any real problems in your life, and seem quite childish, so I'll make assumption that you are fairly young. There are things in the world that you can never change no matter how much you worry about them or pretend to worry. We live in the most comfortable and peaceful time in human history and it's 100% thanks to fossil fuels and nuclear power, and when they go, so does "overpopulation" and our peace and comfort around the world. Be thankful and grateful for what you have while you have them. The world isn't going to end. Humanity will not go extinct. All animals will not die. Socialism and giant technocratic governments controlling everyone worries me the most, apart from having food on my table.

@Dan Theisen - Buddy, they have to _show their work._ Part of basic science is doing an experiment that other people _can repeat_ and get similar results. What you’re proposing is that hundreds upon thousands upon millions of scientists from the past century are all joined together in a massive conspiracy, which is incredibly infeasible. Also, the unfortunate implication IF we can take you at your word is that scientists are untrustworthy and unreliable narrators. At that point the earth becomes flat, vaccines suddenly do cause autism, and the moon is a hologram. Also, on the animal stuff: First I think that our efforts should be focused on things that cause higher emissions like energy production and transportation, since agriculture only makes up 10-11%. However, growing meat WOULD cause less emissions. Just look at a cow-it’s a living creature, and like most living creatures it converts oxygen to co2. Cows are generally kept for six years before being slaughtered, and cows on average release 30 to 50 gallons of CO2 a day. Now multiply that cow by several million and add in all the other kinds of livestock, and you see that those carbon emissions are _really_ starting to build up. Lab grown meat absolutely _would_ mean fewer emissions. That being said, I really don’t think we should be focusing on stopping meat production until we’ve got the big offenders squared away.

Have we accelerated climate change yes but it doesn’t matter what we do the earth and the universe are going to die we’re just ants in a room nothing we do have impact once the universes explodes taking everything with it nothing humans have done or accomplish will remain nothing u do in life matter the only thing that will remain in this universe are black holes but even after a trillion years black holes dies there will be nothing left only god and lady death will remain so to all the climate activists and climate deniers it really doesn’t matter who’s right in the end this planet will die and there’s nothing you can do 🤷‍♂️ Edit: unless you can bend reality to your will

Yes, that's the answer! Population control!!! And for those that live through that, behavior control! Yes, the billionaires will keep just enough of you around to meet their basic needs, but without polluting the new world they've created or cluttering it up with more people! Reminds me of the Sumerians' history where the gods got upset because they couldn't sleep because of the clamor of all the people, so they wiped the people out... Yup, this "channel" seems aptly named as far as I can tell... Hippocrites, how can you sit there and gripe about "carbon footprint" while typing into a computer or phone? Have you ever thought beyond your noses? Where do the materials to make these things come from and what does it take to get from the mined ore from worlds mines, smelters, and the oil fields, production facilities, chemical plants, etc, etc, etc...and all the in-between infrastructure to make the products you can't live without??? How much fossil fuel was used in the manufacturing, transporting and installing the parts of the internet between your computers to the cables, to the switches, to the worldwide fiber optic cable system, to the ISP servers, in the huge air-conditioned buildings to house them, and on to the destination's servers where it begins again and on to the message's destination? Look up each piece of the system and what it takes to make it, and see what I mean. Most of you likely haven't a clue what's involved to get you your phone, even AFTER it's been manufactured. Consider something simpler than electronics...the vegetables you get from Walmart. Farmers grow the seeds they got from a seed company. Seed companies are huge business. Lots of trucks, trains, even airplanes involved... Trucks and even trains bring the seeds in and other trucks haul them to distribution points where they are shipped to farmers. The farmers then use a LOT of motorized equipment and chemicals to grow the veggies you want. LOTS of diesel! Lots of chemicals! Then the veggies are shipped to the produce warehouse after the farm tractors spend days harvesting... While other tractors prepare the fields for the next crop... The main produce distribution point of Walmart used to be in Riverside, Ca. LOTS of trucks from all over SO-CAL bring in the produce from the farms using LOTS of trucks and tractors and other equipment using fossil fuel... At the produce distribution warehouse, LOTS of trucks sit there all day running refrigeration units powered by diesels the size of a car engine to keep the trailers cool. They also run smaller diesel engines to power the trucks heat or air conditioning. The warehouse has LOTS of Propane powered forklifts that run day and night loading and unloading trucks. Trucks loading here at this warehouse travel as far as the eastern US Walmart distribution warehouses where forklifts unload and reload the freight coming in day and night. The loaded trucks go to the stores (unloaded with more forklifts) and deliver the produce you eat and then travel to pick up something else YOU want to buy, sometimes hundreds of miles. This doesn't even consider all the fossil fuels used in everything from mining the minerals to manufacturing the products and transporting the equipment to the end buyers, along with all the other infrastructure used by everyone and every business along the way, including their (mostly) personal vehicles to get to and from work. So...are you willing to give up your computer, phone and internet? Of course, you realize you'll be without electricity. Can't have those nasty coal mines operating to produce power. And who's going to manufacture new fuel rods for the nuclear power plants or maintain them? How about your car? Are you willing to grow your own produce and other food sources? I didn't think so. There's your "Inconvenient Truth"!

Guys just some food for thought. Greenhouses pump co2 in for their plants to raise the levels because theres, wait for it... NOT ENOUGH CARBON. Climate is changing but its not because of humans. Guess humans caused us to come out of the ice age. Oh no wait that was the earth coming closer to the sun. Nothing to do with any activity from humans. Climate change is fear mongering done by the media. They will show areas in china and claim that is co2 when in fact co2 is invisible. When are people going to realise that co2 is not the problem and that there is actually not enough co2 in the world? Lookup Dr Patrick Moore and just have a look at some of the info. Not the media where everything is skewed as hell.

Kurzgesagt has done videos on this specifically so its curious that they do not reference that now. it really makes me think that they are following political talking points over objective science. which is a shame

It's funny that you say that there's simply no way that anyone will abandon growth because "growth = wealth" (which is false) but it's perfectly reasonable to expect that efficiency (which provably increases consumption) and reducing emissions per unit energy will happen despite: 1. Emissions not being the only contribution to ecosystem collapse (e.g. human land use, mining, deforestation, topsoil depletion, hydrological cycle disruption, nitrogen loading, waste dumping, anthropogenic mass extinction) 2. Fossil fuel consumption being more of a contributor to wealth (because of its high EROI but also because it powers mechanized militaries that can be used to colonize and proletarianize poorer populations) 3. The world being dominated by fossil fuel industries that are much more capable of fighting to maintain the status quo than a bunch of impoverished, colonized nations 4. And most importantly, *ideology being more malleable than reality* There is exactly one solution to ecosystem collapse: Reduce resource and energy throughputs. That's it. There's no magic sci-fi technology that is going to allow us to consume all the planet's resources at an exponential rate without ever collapsing. At current growth rates we will need to consume all the energy produced by the Sun in only 1400 years. We need to reduce resource and energy throughputs. Individuals cannot accomplish this because most consumption happens at the societal level. We (as in all of society) need to reduce resource and energy throughputs. And just on a side note, using an induction stove powered by nuclear power is not "more efficient" than coal. On one hand, coal is burned to produce heat and the heat is used for the stove. On the other, nuclear fuel is fissioned to produce heat which is used to turn water into steam which is used to turn a rotor which is used to generate electricity which is sent through a transformer which is sent through a power line which is sent through the stove's electronics which generates eddy currents in the pot which is turned into heat. This isn't even including the amount of energy required to build the nuclear power plant, mine and process its fuel, or manufacture the induction stove. The only way the latter is "more efficient" is if you ignore that the coal can be used on its own while the induction stove requires an entire global, high-energy-producing state to even exist let alone be used.

As I said, I am not saying that electric cars do not produce any CO2. What I am saying that they produce less than fossil fuel cars, per average. Then again, it was said we could impose hefty tarrifs on cars that are older than X year as to force people to change them. It's not that they do not have money, they are just lazy to do so.

science has discovered that: the heating and cooling of the earth is cyclical, it follows the cyclical process of the sun, the atomic explosions on the sun, and excess solar energy will overheat the earth and when the sun enters a process of calm, the minimum radiation will create a glacial climate on earth. This behavior has been repeated for thousands of years, and will continue to repeat itself, this means that it is cyclical, it does not depend on the action of man, emission of carbon, carbon oxide, cows, etc. the action of this component is insignificant. So please stop telling lies.
