With regard to Zverev's illness at Roland/Garros, in lieu of Covid, it should be policy that the doctor make all announcements with regard to a player being on the court. It should not be the responsibility of a player to explain to the press and fans why he or she is playing regarding the virus. And it should be explained by the doctor to everyone prior to play. A player should not be the one explaining medical information regarding a pandemic virus.

Zverev matures more and more! It seems, he already passed the barrier where "talents" like Felix could touch him. That is great! He had bad luck facing Sinner at french open early. Sinner was the only guy at the French who gave Nadal a real fight in the whole tournament. He could potentially beat Nadal one time at the french. I bet, Sinner is going to be the dominant #1 player when the era of the big 3 ends. Zverev will be probably in the top 5 players for long. But I still doubt he has that "special thing" like Nadal, Federer or Djokovic, who just seem to have a better "instinct" in matches compared to Zverev, who seems to lack that killer mentality on court. But I hope he proves me wrong at one day ;)

The funniest thing to me is that zverev is most famous (at least on the internet) for "putting himself in there" for "strongest" and "best backhand" and hes been so amazingly incompetent strategically and mentally that people actually think he's wrong. The truth is, he absolutely has world class striking power and competes with djokovic for having the best 2 handed backhand on tour, but since he's always a mile behind the baseline and playing safe shots with absolutely no strain or urgency his shots end up looking mediocre in power and precision. I reallt enjoyed seeing that, in these highlights, he showed a willingness to actually assert himself during points, several times hitting clean winners from a meter behind the baseline, showcasing that he has so much power available that he doesnt even need to hug the baseline to apply pressure during a point. One can only imagine what he would be capable of if he was willing to actually output even the slightest bit of aggression during baseline rallies. Maybe then, people wouldnt laugh at his claims about the potency of his striking power.

    • bonzwah1

      bonzwah1

      Maand geleden

@quentin hirschfeld I mean, when you say that his mental prevents him from being a grand slam winner, you are not disagreeing with anything I said. As long as you understand that, then I'm satisfied.

    • quentin hirschfeld

      quentin hirschfeld

      Maand geleden

@bonzwah1 But the truth is, he is not good enough at the moment to beat Djokovic, Federer or Nadal in their gardens! The only GS he have a chance to win in my opinion is the USO.

    • quentin hirschfeld

      quentin hirschfeld

      Maand geleden

@bonzwah1 You don't get my point, i didn't say Monfils is flatout every time, i say that he has the possibility to throw nukes consistently! Moreover, never say Zverev got physical or technical issue (appart from his hand skills that are mediocre), i say that whatever it is a timing, mental or technical problem, his backhand is nowhere in comparison to the one of Djokovic or prime Wawrinka!

    • bonzwah1

      bonzwah1

      Maand geleden

@quentin hirschfeld *shrug* monfils is actually an excellent name for you to bring up because he suffers from a similar problem. If someone picked a point of his to watch at random, they would have a 99% chance to end up laugh at you for suggesting that he has "strong" baseline shots. Then 1% of the time, monfils decides to actually take an offensively minded stance, and he shows us baseline striking power that competes with, or perhaps even surpasses the best in the world. - However, I'm not convinced that monfils would be more successful being aggressive because he would likely run into consistency problems. Zverev, I'm much more convinced that he could consistently overpower his competition if he were to choose that tactic. - if you think that his technique or his physical ability is what has prevented him from winning GS's, then you clearly have not watched him play very often. This man cannot win because he is mentally and strategically weak.

    • quentin hirschfeld

      quentin hirschfeld

      Maand geleden

Zverev in terms of the potential of his "strong" baseline shots is nowhere (i exaggerate a little) in comparison to Verdasco, Monfils, Berrettini, Tsitsipas, Nadal, Del Potro or Wawrinka! Talking about his backhand, whatever it is a timing, mental or technical problem, is backhand is nowhere in comparison to the one of Djokovic's or prime Wawrinka! He didn't have the weapons to win a GS even against off prime Nadal, Federer and Djokovic! Now, you have to take Thiem in the equation also!

  43. Lucien Fantke

    Lucien Fantke

    Maand geleden

Zverevs problems: nerves at the worst time. Lack of strength and power. Almost all shots landing at the T-line. I’ve seen it for years now that his shots are almost always too short. He should get a coach that improves on that. I think if he does he will finally be the top player he could be and ein slams. Or he won’t and Shapo and Rublev and Thiem will take the stage for good. JMHO

Six finals and zero sets won. I think Felix has the talent but i don't know if he has the mentality to be the great champion some people expect him to be

What the Freak!!! Felix is a choker... played so well leading to the final bit in the big match... barely put up a fight. If he wasn’t such a nice kid I wouldn’t be rooting for him at all... it’s so annoying to see him be a deer in headlights every freaking final... Congratulations to Zverev. Clearly the better player.

I think it could be mental; I was surprised that he got through RBA! Twenty years old, he still has ways to go.

Zverev completely neutralized a very dangerous FAA... with consistent, deep ground strokes a la' Djokovic. Just goes to show you, even within the top most echelons of tennis, the best of the best, there are distinct levels of play (not based on rankings). And on their day, it's difficult to bet against them on any surface Currently IMO it is: Djokovic-Nadal Federer Thiem Tsitsipas, Zverev Medvedev Shapovalov, FAA. THE REST

FAA playing is predictable and lacks power. Rublev is far better than the Canadian at every skill.

@adisuryashakthi Right now Rublev is on fire and he's way better than FAA. At their peak, it's level IMO. Maybe the edge to FAA, talent wise. But Rublev is more solid mentally. I've been following both for sometime now.

@adisuryashakthi We are not talking "at their peak", but i still would say that "peak Rubllev" is way more dangerous than "peak FAA" at the moment.

@Kieran Rankie Hoping for Federer to repeat 2017, where he came back from a long break. I wouldn't bet against him though.

@quentin hirschfeld Playing at their peak, who would you bet on... FAA or Rublev? My money would be on FAA. It's close though. Sinner is a top prospect no doubt, but we haven't since enough of him yet.

If this is the tennis make up the future, we are in for some boring years to come. All we are seeing are baseline ralleys after baseline ralley - just like on clay. Only that we are on a hard court here.

Feliz Auger-Aliassime is a GREAT PLAYER, he has a creative and play overall, but he needs to perfect his dropshots. Many opportunities in this game to punish Zverev with dropshots. Go ahead, Felix, you'll get it next time! Just look at how many times Zverev was far away from the baseline and you'll notice that's when you can use your dropshots!

@quentin hirschfeld Well, FAA's still in an era where Djokovic, Nadal, and Federer are still better than the vast majority of the competition by a country mile. That being said, the only NextGen player he doesn't have a losing H2H against is Tsitsipas.

      1. Murray won his first title at 18, Stan at 20. 2. We don't call them substandard because it took them awhile to win big, we kind of excuse it because the Big 3 exist. On the other hand, FAA's been in the finals of two ATP 500s and 4 ATP 250s and has not won a single set in any of those matches. 3. We're more lamenting his inability to finish better. 4. It's stupid to criticize other people's critiques simply because "Oh I don't see *you* doing it" for a variety of reasons.

Good win for Zverev, FAA is still fragile but he will win in short time.I like both players. For those who write bad about FAA, they are just tactless, jealous and idiots. A young gifted player shouldn’t be demolished but encouraged. He has plenty of time to win many titles. 🤞 (And for many of you, just get to know the meaning of overrated...).
