Making transparent wood

Check out KiwiCo.com/NileRed for 50% off your first month of ANY crate!
A few years ago I tried making transparent wood and it kind of worked. The pieces that I made were somewhat okay, but I was never really happy with the result.
I finally decided to try it again though!

Why not just polish off the sides instead of sanding them and refinishing the plastic? If the wood was reasonably strong you probably could have buffed it to a glass finish even with the wood exposed. You have so many tools, you should get an actual cutting pad/dual action buffer to let tech do the work for you :)

You should try using a barrier of some kind around the outside of the wood to stop the mma from running away under gravity. I've got a couple ideas that might work, firstly some adhesive backed foam used for weather strip on doors / windows, another idea is to use Tack-Tape used in the vacuum bagging process when working with carbon composites. good choice on Freekote 700 NC that stuff works wonders, I use it on all of my composite projects.

It was fun to read in the paper that the balsa wood was bought at Wentzels in Sweden. I lived neighbour to the founder, Sven Wentzel in the 1989s. Unfortunately webshopping by Wish/Ali express etc made the shop less profitable and Svens business ended after 84 years.

There is one change I would suggest could be worthwhile. There are products on the market made for this kind of application; stabilizing resins. They are low viscosity heat-set resins made exactly for this purpose. In fact, the wrapping the piece in aluminum foil reminds me distinctly of the videos I've seen of them being used. I think the paper you referenced may have assumed the foil necessary, when really it's just to protect the oven from any run-off (typically used to preserve interesting pieces of wood that aren't flat).

I don't think your mold release is doing much, if anything, for your glass. The fact that it's beading up tells me it's not adhering to the surface at all. I think you'd have the same results from just the alcohol/microfiber cloth cleaning. Mold release like that is more typically used for a rubber or plaster mold.
