Interview with Korey Coleman:
I've wanted to make this video for years. Here I discuss my religious past, and how members of the religion I was raised in attempted to keep me from pursuing my goals. I hope that this video can prove inspirational for other people who have felt trapped in life. Thank you for watching.

Thank you all so much. The outreach since the interview went up has been overwhelming and has helped me heal. I can’t tell you how much it means to me that you’ve understood. I was anxious about discussing these things, but I’m so happy to learn that many ex-JWs watch the channel, and I truly hope this video reminds you that you’re not alone. Anyone out there afraid to come out about something, I see you. I support you. Thanks so much everyone.

Religious cults like JW are crazy groups, man, and I'm glad you've stepped out of the boundaries of the crazy restrictions and beliefs of that religious group and left all that crazy shit behind. I just wish Jehovah's witnesses would be a faith of love and not a cult of control. I don't know how it feels to live live that. It's horrible and not a place of love like they say it is. The way the dictate your life and make you ignore the faithless is not the way that Christ wants anyone to live. I hope that everyone here can find their happiness no matter who you are.

As a Christian, this literally physically hurts and causes just weird bodily discomfort to hear what people have been telling you about God and faith, and just humanity in general. I am so sorry. I hope you find peace with your past and in your future, especially in regards to family and loved ones. The teachings of these people are so strangely anti-christian its weird they claim to be one in the same.

I live in Germany. Left an abusive family to join an evangelic church. Left them after about almost 20 years and I can't tell which was worse. Physical or mental psychological abuse. But what I can tell is that it's worth breaking free. Even if you like me lose all of your friends and you have to relearn to think and live for yourself like me in the midst of your 30's. I didn't even have favorite bands except Christian stuff... Everything they teach made sense to me for a long time of my life. Looking back today it's ridiculous. It's all about manipulation and making easy money. Even though many ministers suffer financially because they are getting used by those who make good money. Hibestly their is really little less help for people that leave groups like I did. But you probably only have this one life. Don't waste it on this scam!!

So glad you shared this. It's crazy how similar everything you talked about is to the church of christ (Though obviously not as extreme). From the shaming of sexuality, homophobia, fear of media, calling other people "worldly," a governing group of male elders, etc. The thing that struck me the most was what you said about being left behind, socially and culturally. I left the church around six years ago now and I still feel like I'm behind in so many areas of my life. Glad you made it out the other side, and thanks for being another voice for all the people who feel trapped.

I was raised a JW... felt pressured to be baptized at age 16. At age 18 I couldn't take it anymore and voluntarily 'Disassociated' myself from the organization. My father was an Elder in the congregation and very well respected. I was basically 'disfellowshiped'.... my Dad disowned me. I was utterly alone and thrown into the world. I was so naive, and went through a LOT in my 20's. I was so lost. At age 30, got married and started having kids. For a brief period my family started talking to me again, and I was 'reinstated', but I never felt comfortable with them so I just stopped going.... as a result today at age 56, I am living my own life and extremely happy. I do not live by ANY religion... I consider myself spiritual but not a part of a 'organized' religion. I raise my kids to find their own spiritually, even if it's agnostic. I will NEVER go back to JW or any religion, I live free, happy and without fear. Leaving the JW faith for good was the best decision I ever made.

Being religious and seeing things like this really does make you question your own beliefs. I would implore anyone who has faith, including myself, to analyze their belief system and make sure that it is lead by one thing above all else: Love. If your belief system, whatever it is, doesn't focus on love of all people above all else, I would maybe take a long look into the mirror. So glad that you got out, Chris. Glad you're choosing to lead with love.

Good for you Chris. Seriously I’m glad you were able to break free of all that. I despise religion in all forms for basically all the reasons you outlined in your video. Similarly I grew up in a Baptist community in the Bible Belt and when I became 18 I decided that I was an atheist and religion wasn’t for me but when I informed my family of my decision they were disappointed but my experience was nowhere near what a Jehovahs Witness would go through. Fortunately my family still talks to me we just have different world views. I had no idea aspects of Jehovahs Witness were this extreme so it was quite eye opening.

Thank you for this. My moms mom became a witness when my mom was a kid and before my mother died she told me alot things about why she had become one too and why SHE LEFT. Since my moms recent death I felt bad that I never gave it a chance and I have been studying with them and I have always found it very taxing and upsetting and I hate it, but now I am in this community that all some how know my grandmother, and I already know they may choose not to speak to me if they find MY youtube channel. Not to mention I think it will make her upset. And all these people whobhave been offering to help me and have from time to time helped me, will feel betrayed and turn their backs on me. I have a feel actuall friends, but the pressure of this large group of people actually make me really really really worried. I have to dress a certain way and I am constantly worried that I will take my dog for a walk and someone seeing me will comment that my shirt is too loose or will tell the others about my old kung fu school jacket. So I love and make tshirt and stuff but I don't wear anything anime Harry potter or kpop related even startrek isn't ok. I can't even believe you are wearing a cowboy beebop shirt right now. Recently a family remember made a offical request and contract for me to signe making me a student. I turned it down amd now theybare like "now I understand that you are truly independent and leading your own life ..... and then they say that they "don't bring up becoming a witness" but the next long email and text is all about the difference in ur life if you are onenor not and that to not study the biblenis not wise and I have things all wrong. I didn't even say that i was no longer going to study. I have been pressured to study with others ever since I said o would preffer to study alone. Thank you again

This cult, and that's what it is, dictates that the free will we are given should not be used. This idea you can be vile and intolerant to others & turn your back on your own children just to get the reward of a 'heaven' on Earth is the most selfish attitude a human being can take. Jesus would cry. At University I knew a former Jehovah Witness - a 21 yr old who had been isolated by his whole family but took a science subject, I believe he was gay though never really came out when I knew him so I'm not 100% - nor if it added to his reasons for 'leaving'.. He never returned back to the Jehovah witnesses but several years later I heard he took his own life. Connected. Very probably. What I do know as a fact he was a tortured soul when the rest of us just enjoyed the University life. I'm from the UK. They are everywhere.

Beautiful video Chris incredibly inspirational I applaud you and your efforts. It’s a shame to see Gods love so brazenly misused and abused

I found your video very interesting and some aspects your were talking about intellectually fascinating, as I did not know much of this particular cult. Jehovah’s witness as explained by you comes across as a fundamentally Christian cult - not in the way that the figure of Christ is central or anything, but in its core sensibility. In some way, it is not that different from any orthodox Catholicism, Mormonism, or any other born-anew tele-cults that proliferate in the USA. Many years ago, when I just came to New York as a student, right after serving in IDF, I got approached on the street by two well-suited young Mormon preachers my age or even a couple of years younger. This was right next to their main temple near Lincoln Center. By that time I was interested in philosophy and theology, and, like any secular Israeli citizen, my studies of Jewish Bible were limited to what I learned in my 1-hour-per-week class at my secular school. Yet, I quickly realized that despite being a secular Jew, I still knew so much more about the Bible and its meanings than those young lads, that, after about an hour of conversation with them, I think it was me who planted the seeds of understanding in them that could in time help them shake off their cult orthodoxy! It is funny, but I ended up proselytized them instead of them proselytizing me! It seems that all these cults rely on certain level of ignorance, and once that ignorance is lifted, there is not much to sustain the cult: what was seen cannot be unseen. I started by asking those Mormon guys, and later, the other religious Christians I encountered in my philosophy classes at University: - If there is God, why do you think it owes you anything? You may pray and he may or MAY NOT grant your wishes, but the prayer relationship has always been that of supplication and a hope for a grant, not of establishing a “duty” in legal terms! Christianity as religion - its very central tenet subverted this fundamental (and worldly) understanding (!): Convert or get baptized and you will be saved! Really?? Suddenly, if you do something - follow some rules, or belong to a group, suddenly God owes you something, i.e. his 'duty' of saving you is established?? How presumptuous of Christians! In this respect, ancient pagan religions were more worldly and sophisticated than our current ones - the Greeks and Romans understood that while they did all their prayers and sacrifices, they did so because they HOPED those would be helpful, not because they EXPECTED any help in return; They understood their prayers established no obligation. In fact, when worshipping was seen to establish 'obligation' - this was called "magic" and was rather opposite of religion and was forbidden! Judaism is conceptually similar to this early understanding of worship and prayer and therefore differs profoundly from Christianity. Yes, in Judaism there is an aspect of “chosen people” whom God promised to protect AS PEOPLE, but not necessarily save any particular person in this life or the next! Salvation is not guarantied to anyone, in fact, there are no guaranties even for the most pious ones! Anyone who wishes to understand what Judaism is really about and how fundamentally different it is from Christianity despite Christianity’s claim of descendance from it, should start with reading one of the most profound Jewish Bible “wisdom books” - the Book of Job: It is not a happy story, and its ending is not really a happy ending either: Although Job ends up gaining back what was lost, it is not because it was restored to him as if “undone”; In fact, what was lost was lost forever, despite all his lifelong piety and unwavering loyalty! He is then helped to re-start from scratch and re-create what was lost, very much like the way it happens in real life when we fall, then pick ourselves up and build our life anew, but this new is not and cannot be the exact same as the old that was lost. So, whether the story has a happy ending is debatable, but this is the story every Christian would do well to ponder and examine, and then reflect on the central promise of their Christian religion in its light. When properly understood, this story has the power to kill off numerous religious cults that still proliferate among the more ignorant and less educated of the US populace. As for those who think such approach would make them morally adrift, here's is one suggestion for them: You do what you think is right, not because you get rewarded for doing things right, but because doing right is the right thing to do! You should not expect any rewards for doing what is right! It is not that if you are not getting reward, you should go ahead and do things wrong! And if you receive an award - treat it not as a prize, but as an encouragement to do even better, and be grateful for it. Good for you for coming out of cult and not being afraid to speak about that. Cheers!

Since you weren't officially disfellowshipped your parents could still talk to you. I am disfellowshipped. Was this video worth that? It was a great video, but man, its tough.

I'm agnostic, but I do have friends that are Jehovah's Witness, I do respect them and this is a very interesting topic.
