I put HOLES in our HULL (boat work with JADE) | Expedition Evans BONUS

With Brett off to his other work, it's boat building with Jade again. Except this time, it's not so much building as it is removing some of our hard work. When we laid the glass we intentionally glassed over the bolt holes where the keel bolts through the hull and grid. This allowed us to...

Here's what we *think* we know about her past. Keep in mind we bought her at auction without ever meeting the owner! The owner was sailing along and ran aground - hard. Hard enough that the keel pivoted and pushed the aft end up into the hull. This force cracked the internal grid in several places and broke a portion of the grid free from hull. At some point an inspection was done, insurance was called and decisions were made. See nlcameras.info/wiki/g4CYfaqs1X-Y02k/video for how we came to own her!

If you are 2-3 times my age with the equivalent of added experience, please think before you criticize me for learning and gaining my own experience. I'm here. I'm doing it. I'm fixing this boat and learning a lot and creating these videos for you guys. Stop raining on my parade. Suggestions and ideas are totally welcome and can hopefully be a resource for others who watch these videos. And a note on misogyny: this is my boat and my project just as much as it is Brett's.

Don’t let hate marinate in your joy. Living an unconventional life takes courage. Capturing it, editing it, and publishing for all to see is an act of kindness. Hate and negativity is always a weakness, because it’s the easy way out of their own shortcomings. Ignoring it doesn’t make it right, nor does it make it go away. Social media is its own ecosystem, with predators and prey aplenty. Keep focussed on your own journey, share it for your own reasons. We support your journey, and your spirit. Don’t enable shallow swimmers in your pool!

What helped us a lot when thinking about abrasive methods and epoxy, treat it as a soft metal. Something between hard wood and soft mild steel. Metal tools are golden but the glass will wear anything out. Wood tools where they make a nice cut on wood usually never do on epoxy. When we did a lot of thru deck holes, we used a lot of stepped drill bits, makes a nice chamfer on the holes too. You have done a stellar job!

Instead of using bolts to secure the keel. Have you thought of using studs? They have a raised shoulder that will seal the stud to boat joint better than sealing on the threads of the bolt. From an engineering position. There are many other structure qualities that a stud offers over bolts.

But if I drilled those holes, there’s no way the keel bolts would match up! Admire your courage. Great work on keeping that wrecked boat demon at bay. I actually really appreciated seeing your thought processes. Working through each problem that pops up, finding a workable solution and then applying what you learned until you became proficient. I wish you had shown a tiny bit more concern over punching holes in your freshly glassed hull. It's a reasonably large problem if say you had put a hole in the wrong spot. I'm sure you had those concerns but the story teller in me needed to see that.

You are wonderful. The vast majority of your audience are supporting this adventure and it has become our adventure. Keep going and ignore those who want something different. I think most people don’t understand they are not viewing in real time and you cannot always take advice on things that have already happened. They probably don’t understand the amount of time it takes to set up a shot, repeat it multiple times and edit the footage, the latter about an hour per minute. You are also creating your own history and memories.that your families can view in the future. COVID is oppressive and depressing so keep going, For the audience, this boat has already launched so most of the advice is surplus to requirements. Just remember you are amazing!!

Used to do two different things when trying to use a bigger hole saw in a hole. One was some arbors for hole saws have a long thread for the hole bits, allowing you to put the smaller one inside the larger one( instead of drill bit). But more often I'd drill a hole in a piece of one inch stock and center that hole over where I want to drill and use it as a guide.

Advices and critics are useless (mostly "next time" for no, they will not redo it over) Videos popup weeks after job's done. Laying fibers ideal maximum strength is done following its tram and 4 cardinal points. NS, WE, NE/SW, NW/SE axis (or depending on tram's designs) I haven't seen it done. Everyone it's own style. The surveyor has certainly been watching the videos, and they passed it with flying colors.

Think you're doing great work, and I know I like these videos more, since it features you so much more; solving problems, and proving you're far more than another pretty face, etc... May not be necessary, but since fiberglass is slightly porous to water, you may want to seal those holes in glass hull with a finishing resin that is waterproof (has waxes in mix) or a thin layer bedding of compound like 5200 or whatever you were planning on using when keel is re-attached to seal in place the mounting bolts. You had a good idea that I hadn't considered, sanding the edges of holes will give a small chamfer on bolt holes helpful for sealing compound to compress into for improved sealing.

Good job, Jade. Hole saws without center drills are like pogo sticks without bumper pads. Wander all over the place and bounce a lot ....

good job. Wear a respirator. Don't know if I missed it, but I'd a steel plate or a piece of angle iron to distribute the load. Don't want your keel following off or cracking the hull

Great work Jade, not easy drilling the bottom of the boat. Just a comment that might help you guys, now that you have all that additional Fiberglass on the inside and out where your keel bolts up. I would seriously consider new keel bolts/studs after you showed the piece the hull in the hole saw, one needs to measure the additional depth of glass layup and add that to the original bolt/stud length and have new ones made up and installed before the keel is even put in place. Also the mounting surface where the washers for the bolts land on the inside of the hull should be square to the bolt centreline to get maximum grip and even pressure on the hull floors (you call this your grid). It sure looks like you guys overbuilt it like the preverbal brick sh*t house. good luck on the finish, enjoy your labours.

How will the water get through each compartment to the sump in the middle, just overflow like a dam wall?

It's a boat. Another name for a device that will leak water in every inconceivable place.
