    1 Mt = 2000 ISS, not 2. The mass of the ISS is 419 tonnes. Doesn't mean it isn't worth building, just a typo. Every year we launch on average 4 kt of mass into space and this costs billions $. Having such a thing as a space elevator we can increase the number of launches a lot.

    Science Fiction, definitely. Also, how can people build such structure if it's too expensive to build? Not only that, but the fact that the moon rotates around Earth, making the one-spot space elevator impossible? I think we should leave the moon alone as messing with it would have a lot more negative consequences than positives, like reducing gravity, etc.

    What about making it as a hydraulic elevator? It would, admittedly, probably take some very resistant metallic alloy to make sure the pipes wouldn’t bust by the pressure the water inside of them would create, plus they would need to be put together underground to get something of this magnitude done with earth’s gravity plus the pipes used to send the water (or maybe some other liquid? Not sure what would be best, but mercury is much denser than water, thus creating greater pressure hydrogen is a fluid with much weaker density if it would make it easier) , it would probably be easier done by making the pieces separately and then mounting it on a mountain top (maybe not something as extreme as Everest, but it is a thought) by securing each piece of the top and then mounting the parts of the bottom under it in holes caved in such a way as to make it difficult or outright impossible for the parts already in their places to fall back down, if the holes were filled in some liquid it could diminish the amount of force needed to move each piece, high-potency magnets of the same charge set on the bottom of out theoretical mounting caves and the underside of each piece could be used to make it even easier, though it would raise the problems related to energy needs.

      The tether would break/counterweight would crash way before it would have any kind of effect on the planet. Earth is just way too big with way too much momentum for any of our construction projects to have any real impact on it.

    we literally have all the things and science needed to start endeavoring and building stuff in space. while scientists comes up with more and better ideas for space exploration, all the governments can do is spend billions and trillions on useless social well fare and defense projects. I mean is it more important for lazy homeless people to receive the money rathan than scientists? It's non-sense that we are still stuck on earth.

    A space elevator on the Moon would be a much bigger construction project than one on Earth. The Moon only rotates once per month, rather than once per day, so the centrifugal force holding the elevator up is 30 times weaker, while surface gravity is only 6 times weaker. The counterweight would have to be several times further out just to break even, and on top of that it would also have to hold up the weight of a much, much longer tether. On the other hand, the Moon has no weather and no orbiting junkyard, which reduces the risk a bit. Kevlar isn't a good choice in either case, though, it has a low resistance to ultraviolet.

    Space elevator❗ The latest inventions that scientists today are designed is, to build a space elevator connecting Earth and space and this will lift the carriage of passengers and goods to outside the earth. The Quran has pointed to this innovation in the verse: (If you feel bitty for their objection, see if you can go in a tunnel inside the earth or reach the sky through a ladder) {al-anaam : 35 }

    Doesn't the moon rotate? Are the poles of the moon n earth aligned? How can we make a stationery space elevator with a tether that way? Will need flexible engineering with lots of parts like in the case of a dyson sphere but a linear version. How are people floating such ideas with all seriousness, given how we've created space conditions to compound the difficulties making it impossibly difficult n dangerous even if the nature of geometry, celestial motion, and physics would allow it.

    • Olga Hein

      Olga Hein

      The moon does rotate. Very slowly though, it takes 27.3 days for the moon to rotate around itself. Same time it takes to rotate around the earth. That's why we always ever see the same side of the moon.
