Thanks Sailing Uma, it was a little unclear. Your vid started with you talking about your plan to start sailing down the fjord. Then cut to a night shot about the weather coming in and the poor anchorage and hoping you would not have to leave in the dark. Next shot it is full dawn and you are getting ready to depart. It sounded to me that you were proceeding to plan, so I asked.

If the weather didn’t shift, we would have not left. And if we had stayed despite the wind shift, there is a big chance Uma would have ended up on the rocks and we would have lost our boat... Therefore ... the weather ... forced us to make the right decision which was ... to leave.

Nice. Norway is pretty WOW!! As someone who knows almost nothing about sailing, but is interested to learn, it would be cool to watch an hour or so of the footage from the camera you have locked off at the back of the boat that points forward while you were doing all of that tacking, reefing, trimming, etc. Would be super educational.

This reminds me of when I was sailing (open boat 6m/16m2). In the Netherlands (Friesland) there are mostly small waters, so your always tacking. The battle against the wind, trying to luff up a bit in a big gush of wind to get more mileage out of one tack. Sailing is hard work :).

Hey guys - quick question on anchoring out there in the rocky fjords. You mentioned about how the anchor doesn't have anything to dig into and you had some chain out which you could hear dragging with the shift. How much would you let out in those locations? I'm always so scared of our chain wiggling its way into crevices and getting horribly trapped in and around the big rocks if we're shifting. Awesome video as always guys - lots of love from our SV to yours. x

Our angle to the wind was just fine 35° apparent. The motor wouldn't change that. The difficulty was how quickly the wind was shifting and how strong it was gusting.

Hi I just wondered how you were finding your Teamo life jackets. I noticed Dan Is wearing one KIka isn't. I really like the Idea of the back tow feature but I'm not sure about the rest of the jacket (some features seem poor)? .. as you move about you have a quite a long length of 'strap' dangling behind you is this not annoying and a little dangerous? Great videos love watching them (now my favourite boat to follow). stay safe.

We love them. I, Dan, was wearing mine since I was the one that day going forward to reef the main. That long strap is just to adjust or loosen the side straps and can easily be cut down to a shorter length if needed. We just haven't bothered since it doesn't really get in the way.

Ever considered a self tacking jib?

    • Sailing Uma

      Sailing Uma

      Dag geleden

Not on our boat. We have a smaller main and larger headsail, so a self tacking jib would be useless. Besides, its very easy to tack our boat and pull the head sail across. We really don't see the benefit of a self tacking jib on a boat our size. Maybe on a 60ft mono or a catamaran with a huge main and tiny jib.

I think that was the most cinematically perfect video I have seen from you guys. Breathtaking views of that amazing landscape, brilliant editing and great mixing with the drone shots. And that's coming from a filmmaker (and sailor). I still haven't figured out how you did the drone shot of the drone backing away from you guys, becasue it didn't look like you were controlling it. Maybe it was a command button you hit, but the films you guys make really come off like you have a full time camera crew, which obviously isn't the case. Congrats on making a truly captivating video!

It would be fantastic and helpful to other electric powered boats if you gave a short accounting of the kwh you use, like left with 32 kw, ran motor for 30min at 2000 rpm, used 5kwh no sun, cooking/navigation used 2kw, plugged in at 5:30PM, charged 10kwh, 240vac at 20A, etc. I'm sure you log something like that, let us know how efficent you are as compared to ICE engines.

    • Sailing Uma

      Sailing Uma

      3 dagen geleden

It’s really not that simple. We do have some numbers on our website, and we have talked about generalities is many past videos. We also don’t keep detailed records. We have a general idea how much power we use in a day and that’s good enough for us. Since every boat, and every condition is different our numbers wouldn’t be much use to compare. You also can’t compare to an ICE. It’s not Apple to apples.

    • Sailing Uma

      Sailing Uma

      3 dagen geleden

There is really no way of knowing the effect, since multiply conditions change so frequently. In a lab, maybe, in the real world not so much. It has more to do with the time it takes us to haul it up, remove and stow the motor, tank, oars, tie everything down, only to reverse the process a few hours later when we arrive. If there is no danger to the dinghy (i.e waves) and we'll be using it daily, we don't mind towing it. Besides, we often jump in and film from it while underway.

Just a tip from an offshore racer. When the wind strength is highly variable rather than having to reef and unreef the main you can pull it all the way up the traveller and ease the main sheet. This will spill wind without the main flogging and still allow you to point as high as your headsail will permit. Gotta make sure your vang is completely off because the spilling of the wind is achieved by the boom lifting in the gusts and opening the leech at the top of the main. Just an idea.

Until I saw Dan's hurricane vid and an anchor rode fouling incident that la vegabonde had, I didn't realize that the anchor isn't where the boat is. And that often it's not the anchor being dug in, but the weight of anchor and chain holding the boat. Incidentally, the M/Y driver that fouled la vega's rode didn't know it either.

    • Sailing Uma

      Sailing Uma

      3 dagen geleden

We always make sure our anchor is properly set and dug into the mud, and usually dont stay in the anchorage when the anchor doesn’t bite: like in this video nlcameras.info/wiki/fmbNep6qv2fTk5g/video ) In this particular scenario we knew there was no hold, but while there was no wind it wasn’t an issue as the boat would not be going anywhere and would be held in place just with the weight of the chain, and so we planned to leave the bay as soon as the predicted wind would start picking up... before any potential drama... hence why we left.

It’s all about perspective. Vacationing in Norway just like vacationing anywhere CAN be expensive because most people on vacation go to hotels, restaurants every day, and buy expensive alcohol in bars. But when you live on a boat, anchoring is free, marinas there are 15$ a day, and you can fish your food for free, and don’t drink much alcohol anyway, then it all balances out. Hands down the most expensive country we’ve ever visited was America.

Hey! First of all, stunning video! Been following you guys since about the beginning, as coincidentally we bought our boat round the same time and had some refitting to do as well :). Our home harbour is Flensburg, which is also in a (sort of) fjord. Now we and our boat are a little more on the sporty side but if it gusts that variably we often just point higher up whenever the wind picks up to keep the heel controllable. This way you can avoid reefing too far. It does require a bit more concentration though ;), and off course I don't know how quickly uma rounds up. In a race we just have the main off the lock and let go a little right before overpowering everytime. Btw, nice precision sails! We have been using their polyester laminates for 3 years now, really good value for the quality

I watch Norway thru your eyes and wonder why Norwegians left that beautiful land for Minnesota USA. ?? We have same temperatures. But the Norway land is so pretty. MN USA does have 10,000 lakes. But nothing like that

Great sailing. Wonderful to actually watch you mine and tack. Don't know much about sailing, Only just got an idea about reefing, although not sure actually how u do it. Yes, suspect I am better to remain in Dry land. Lol

I'm wondering was there a lot of current? looking at your track seems you're tacking like 120º YIKES! that makes for a long day. Can you bring the sheets on the stay sail inboard of the stays? that might help you point higher. I did the math it's more like 110º but still lets say if you could point 10º higher you would have sailed like 6 less miles. or roughly an hour and half less. If it was current then wait for a receding tide.

@Sailing Uma hey didn't mean to ruffle the feathers just trying to help... seeing you only have 6 years and 20000 mile under your belt ;-)

Tack angles over ground are only a tiny fraction of everything going on. We were holding around 35° apparent wind angles and in ideal conditions, get solid 90° tack angles. But in the real world, with waves, gusts, wind shifts, land effect etc. angles diminish. Like we said in the video, it was some of the most challenging sailing we've ever done. A lot of the poor upwind performance on this day was attributed to the huge wind speed swings. It was going from 8kts to 35kts multiple times on each tack, which meant we had to be pretty heavily reefed for the gusts, but then in the light air, we would barely move. We also say 90° wind shifts from one side of the fjord, to the other, and it would shift again before we made it back. Trust me, after 6 years and 20,000 mile of actually sailing, we've tacked thousands of times and have a pretty good understanding of what our boat can and can't do.
