Some say room temperature physics is actually possible. I doubt it. It's possible practical fusion power is beyond our reach. Looking at nature, you need the stupendous resources of a star to contain and conduct fusion production. Therefore, it might just be that our clever shortcuts, i.e. magnetic confinement fields and exotic metals, might just be inadequate to support commercially viable fusion. Or, interestingly, we might just leapfrog beyond this 'future' tech into something even greater...

I don't understand, if you can create temperature 100 millions degrees C for fusion to start occur, why would you even bother about fusion energy if you can just get energy from such a high temperature?

Even if the system was 100% efficient you would only be able to extract the amount of energy you put in. If it requires 100 MJ of energy to heat something to incredible temperatures, then you would be able to extract a maximum of 100 MJ.

@Kapten Hiu ITER has a yearly budget of 19 Billions euros (since it's funded at 45% by the EU, against 9% by the US). The British JET research reactor managed to create a burning plasma that sustained around 20% of its heat with the fusion reaction. ITER is aiming at 50%, meaning it would sustain just as much "fusion" power (and not electrical power) as required to make the reactor work : it would be a zero-net reactor. And both are research reactors, meant to show feasibility and not build (to be built for ITER) for industrial purposes. The real economic problem doesn't even come from the physics of the fusion reaction itself, but rather the engineering around such a reactor, like the lifespan of materials exposed to neutron radiation damage or parasitic power drains requiring very large amount of water, different effects coming from the design of a tokamak rather than a "physical laws of the universe" issue. It's very much expected and normal that such problems would rise as we prove it works. Investement in new technologies is always a gamble, and fusion fills a spot that not much, if anything else, can fill.

    • Kapten Hiu

      Kapten Hiu

      Uur geleden

@Andrew Holmes the superpowers that you're talking about are investing in fusion. Who do you think fund the ITER Programme? Microsoft? It's not because lack of funds, it's lack of support from the physical laws of the universe. Thorium reactor has its own problem although not as complex as the fusion reactor. The problem with Thorium is that it is not a good source of heat radiation. Thorium needs more enrichment to make it easier to produce heat. I think the Thorium reactor is overhyped

    • Andrew Holmes

      Andrew Holmes

      5 uur geleden

@Kapten Hiu With current technology and our (imperfect) understanding of physics, you're absolutely right. All I was saying is that the global superpowers don't see the need to fund it because you can't weaponize it. If you need more proof of why this is at least one of the reasons why they don't bother, take a look at Thorium reactors, and why we don't use them.

    • Kapten Hiu

      Kapten Hiu

Do you even understand the physics involved in fusion reaction?? The problem with fusion is: we're trying to build it on Earth. That's the root of all problem with all fusion reactor. IT' S ALL SCAM You will never ever getting net positive energy out of this kind of reactor. Even if you somehow did it, it will so expensive and economically unfeasible. You're trying to contain millions degree of hot high pressurized plasma and maintain it for a long time. It requires all kind of engineering wizardry to do so, and it will never be cheap. Just quit this whole facade... Heck.. even covering the whole of Sahara Desert with Solar power plant sounds more plausible than this thing

    • qvindicator

      qvindicator

      7 dagen geleden

@Harsh Palande the reaction between matter and antimatter converts 100% of its mass to energy making it perfect. It cannot convert 101% of its mass to energy because that would be a violation of the first law of thermodynamics. If it could, it would mean it's creating energy from nothing, but the first law of thermodynamics states that energy canot be created nor destroyed. You are correct that we don't know a lot about the universe, but we do know some stuff to be true and this law is a part of it.

    • Harsh Palande

      Harsh Palande

      7 dagen geleden

@qvindicator oh boy com'on, when antimatter was undiscovered we thought fusion was much efficient than any thing then afterwards when we got to know that there is something like antimatter and it's more efficient than fusion. So just chill cause we are nothing (fully negligible) in this universe, we don't even know 0.0....1% of universe (now just don't say that we know this much, we know that much, science is great and bla! bla! bla! Cause science is a great subject but today's science is nothing in front of what we will have in type 4 civilization). I do agree with you that antimatter is more efficient than fusion but maybe it's good for us that we don't dare to say that nothing can be more efficient than that😅

      N0LifeRada

      22 dagen geleden

@Name JET might have set the world record for Q and power in 1997, but that doesn't mean it broke-even. It still had a Q ratio below 1, meaning that the electrical energy inputted into the reactor was more than the energy being outputted. While nuclear fusion has been achieved in the past, that's not what this is about. We're talking about nuclear fusion *reactors* that break-even with a Q ratio above 1. Just because fusion has been achieved, it doesn't mean that a reactor producing a sustainable amount of energy has as well. I wasn't denying that nuclear fusion has existed for a long time, I was saying that nuclear fusion REACTORS - not fusion in general - is still a considerably new technology.

This episode was bad. Incredibly simplistic, neglects any of the current innovations or approaches to fusion, doesn't tall about the triple product or fusion trends over the years. Very low quality effort.
