Spinning an Apple until it Explodes at 28,500fps - The Slow Mo Guys

Compressed air can be used to levitate rounded objects. Sometimes said rounded objects start spinning so fast that they give up on being round objects. Gav films all the action over 1000x times slower than real time. Check out KiwiCo.com/SlowMoGuys and get your first month free!

Dan is still unable to enter the US by air due to Covid. Don't worry, though. I've heard reports that he went underground and started tunneling this way in April. - Gav

So at 3000 RPM, if we estimate the circumference of the apple to be of 25cm, that gives 3000*0,25*3,6 = 2700kph...

2:15 - Wow! Though the physics demo here is awesome, IMHO this is a much more fascinating neurophysiology and psychobiology demonstration. From what is likely primarily visual input, we see a delay to blink reflex, to a more complex multi-system involuntary flinch reflex, then the feed back as it registers in cognition which we see fed back to recognizable facial expression. Neat!

It is funny when the apple hit on his mask and disappeared. After all these things happened, he looked like something reminded him that it's time to blink.

You know it's about to explode when it slows down and goes in reverse.. it's spinning so fast it's actually reversing time and goes back to before it existed..

I'm surprised that the hole in the Apple didn't cause problems. One would think that would cause the object to fly across the room. Or perhaps that is what caused the catastrophic breakdown of the structure of the item. Another video perhaps. Thanks to you, Dan and Destin.

Actually, you don't need a super-slow-mo shot to estimate the 'nope RPM'. Whenever the apple seems to stop while it's still spinning that means that it's spinning reached the frequency of the light in which we observed it - in this case around 50Hz assuming this was filmed in the US. You can see the first apple seems to stop twice and then spins a little bit more and pops. So it reached a little over 100Hz or 100 revolutions per second, i.e. around 6000 RPM.

2:10 This makes a mockery of our human reaction speed as it seems to take forever for the message to come across that you should blink. xD I also love the term "Nope speed" like the apple at some point just thinks: "That's it, I'm out."

After learning about femto-photography I'm wondering what would happen if that tech was used to capture proof of ghosts? People claim to see balls of light so wouldn't it make sense to find a Haunted Location and try to use femto-photography to capture one of these balls of light?

Gav. FYI: The reason you feel as if something in your observations has gone missing is because it has! You flinched. Whenever you blink your eyes or adjust their direction, your brain edits that instant out of your timeline of observations. Personal observation: When I was about 15 and got my first glasses.... It turned out that before that I couldn't observe say anything more precise than say a degree of resolution. So what's the point in blanking out the movement when your eye has arrived at the new position accurate to a degree. Nothing! With the new glasses the vision was a lot better so for a couple of days I'd see the whole world shake and bounce around as my eyes were still "almost" pointing at the new location....
