Saladin & the 3rd Crusade - Siege of Jerusalem - Extra History - #2
A king does not kill kings. After the battle at Hattin, Saladin had dealt a grievous blow to the Crusader states. Important figures captured, and the majority of Guy's forces had been decimated at the Horns of Hattin. But there was another place that was vital for Saladin to take to keep his uneasy alliance strong. Jerusalem, a city of holy sites for the Abrahamic faiths, had been occupied for 80 years. Now it was time to take it back.

In the Dante's Inferno movie, Dante meets Saladin in Limbo and Saladin, not speaking, just stares at Dante, which gives Dante flashbacks of all the cruelty he unleashed as a Crusader under the delusion that, since a priest promised all of his future sins were absolved by joining the crusade, he could basically do whatever he wanted. Saladin's judgmental eyes freaked Dante out so much that he decided to move on to the second circle rather than stay in the relatively safe Limbo.

I don't believe the dome was gilded Gold at the time. That happened in the 20th century (it's actually an interesting story that involves political posturing and religious justifications for different political factions in the Late and Post Ottoman Levant, such as the Hajj Amin al-Hussaini) Also, Jerusalem to most Muslims is considered the third holiest site, not the second, though as there are many Muslim sects and ideology is not necessarily consistent throughout time, this comes with caveats. The term Palestine at the time is also anachronistic and was not in widespread use by the Muslims in the region at the time. Normally I don't think that would matter much though with contemporary feelings being charged around terms for these areas I think it's important to be clear.

I'm not sure if you're joking, but in case you weren't: There are two Tripolis. One in Lebanon and one in Libya. With both cities being in Arabic speaking countries, it's common to add "of the east" or "of the west" to "Tripoli" in Arabic to distinguish them when the context doesn't provide enough clarity as to which is meant.

There story told here, I don't know if true or not. after the fall of Jerusalem to the Crusaders there was a sense in the Muslim world (although busy in infighting) to liberate the city. The story goes that the crusaders destroyed the items in the Aqsa Mosque including the Pulpit (the seat for the Imam). A carpenter in Aleppo, made a very beautiful pulpit, decorated it with gems but would not sell it. "I made it for Aqsa", he used to say. When people replied that the Aqsa is under occupation, why don't you first go and free the city. He replied, "I am a carpenter, I am good at it. I will do what I am good at. Let the warriors do what they are good at."

It's astonishing that the crusader states lasted as long as they did, crapping themselves and tripping over their own feet the whole way. The first crusade succeeded by fluke and good timing, more because their opponent was politically weak and fractured at the time, plus they managed some wins by luck and crazy fervor. On settling down to govern, every time they'd manage to broker a peace and start being good neighbors, a fresh crop of extremists would show up, be angry that they were making peace with "the enemy", and rile up the neighborhood again. It's astonishing they held together for even a few years under these conditions, and once the Muslims finally coalesced under Saladin, it was just a matter of *when* it would be over.

Saladin really REALLY wanted to kill Raynald, but even when he was full of anger, he had to give Raynald one last chance to save his soul and revert to Islam, as per Islamic code regarding prisoners. And as soon as Raynald refused to revert to Islam, Saladin took his head off, because he knew that if Raynald reverted to Islam, all his past sins would be forgiven by Allah and he would not be harmed.

This video is misleading. saladin didnt destroy the crusader states, they did that to themselves. he conquered jerusalem not by his own ability but by the lack of ability on his opponents side. Saladin was a very inept general in his own right and he lost almost every engagement he had with the crusaders. His army comprised primarily of cavalry archers whose weaponry wasnt capable of inflicting significant damage against the armor of the european knights nor was his employment of steppe tactics, primarily feigned retreats very successful against the disciplined soldiers he versed. His victory at hattin only came because guy was a fool, both as a king and a commander and he walked his army into a position he couldnt win and couldnt retreat from. his most competent vassals warned him against pursuing saladins host and he decided to completely ignore them. The crusaders had to shoot themselves in the foot for saladin to beat them. Also the remaining members of the knights templar (or hospitaller) who were still defending Jerusalem when it fell, brought the roof of their headquarters down on their heads as a form of suicide after the peace they negotiated with saladin (to allow themselves and all the women accompanying them safe passage to the coast) was broken by saladins troops who immediately began fighting eachother for which of the women would become whose slaves. The knights killed the soldiers who had entered the place to accept the surrender, barred the doors and undermined the foundations of the building. So to that end saladin didnt uphold all of his treaties.
