Thank you !! I'm Romanian and I somehow actually feel partly guilty for it all, even though I don't do gymnastics but ever since our kind of gymnastics got out into the west it's been just abuse, and we're intense people and take this love of suffering from the Russians probably. It's horrendeous !! I am so thankful to live in Berlin and in a world where people like you and especially Maggie exist and have the strength to fight an estabilished system and culture of abuse. It's the same in Ballet and all kinds of domans as well, and especially sports, it's so tragic because its our bodies and Gymnastics is the pinnacle of our love for our bodies and the appreciation of its seemingly endless possibilities, like you guys are humanity's reminder of what is actually possible and that's such a glorious thing ! and it should be praised and respected and cherished.... I'm crying while watching this video, as I did when I watched the documentary. It's abuse to the core of what a human being is about. So thank you ! for everything!

It's interesting that a white male is presenting disgust. My empathy, sympathy, and heart-felt pain really aligns more to the female victims. Male privilege is very visible here. I do, however, know that male gymnasts, as i remember growing up, had tremendous pressure on them. Excel at all costs can be toxic.

'Athlete A' didn’t just expose the horrible crime that happened behind those doors. It, if you think about it, it happens all the time, they're pushed into things they don't want to do. Maybe just maybe with these athletes exposing and standing up against their monsters, others will fight to. Scream at the top of your lungs, they can't scare you and they know it.

Hi Nile. Don’t know if you saw my previous naive comment under this video. I hope not. I’ve just read your interview with the BBC and have realized exactly why you hadn’t commented until the moment on the accusations of bullying made against British gymnastics by female gymnasts- not rhythmic gymnasts as I wrongly said. I am once again humbled by your great courage because it is not easy to speak out. You were already immensely brave to make that touching documentary about your mental health. I know who I believe on this and it’s not British Gymnastics. Athletes are the tools that governing bodies use to get medals and hence funding. And it’s not just British gymnastics. Many Olympic athletes from different sports have said similar things but were not listened to. Only the glory matters. Win at all costs. And I’m afraid that in other countries liberal or not it’s worse. In one case it is funding, in the other political. Thank you for making our day with inspirational and “silly” videos even when you were down in the dumps. I will always be a fan even if I have never met you in person and I wish you strength.

Keep up the great work Nile. It is a shame that some are pushed so much in their sports, it takes it's toll on them, at some point in their future life (but I will take a look at the Netflix doc, it is sick that things like that happen, what happened to Maggi :( she is brave to speak out, and for those who may have experienced the same). I only did Gymnastics at School many many years ago, but, I did have coaching whilst I took part in long distance running / cross country running, the experience was a positive one. I still partake in half-marathons for charity each year. I can relate to some of your experiences though, with regards to mental health etc. I've been there. Just have to focus on something, to pull thru it. For me, it was music (creating it and listening to it) running, rugby, swimming and being around positive people and my dog - though she passed away last week :( but keep up the good work Nile.

QUESTION: Did gymnasts such as yourself or your coaches or your equivalent of USAG truly not know? Cuz as someone who was a gymnast nowhere near the elite strata, I saw this a mile away and I'm just here like, "How did no other nation pick up on this? Or did they and just not care or feel the US program was so strong that they didn't wanna 'go there' with it at all?" Not asking if YOU knew, I'm sure you didn't, just saying gymnasts in your position or your coaches or organization.

I was a gymnast in the uk for over 7 years with the majority of it being an elite and although it built me to be who I am in terms of determination and drive, the experience as a whole was awful. From the age of 4 I was bullied by my coaches (all of which were in their late 30s and 40s) and my mum had to stand back behind a glass window and watch her little girl cry because of the coaches but she knew no different, other girls parents would say “oh you get used to it” which is awful yes but that was the truth. The parents didn’t know that it wasn’t like that everywhere until more and more girls were leaving that club for new ones. Eventually enough was enough and I moved clubs. There was no shouting and orders and certainly no bullying and I fell in love with the sport again. All was great for 3/4 years until my amazing coach left the club and I was given a coach that had moved from my old club and all the same shit I’d dealt with years prior was happening again. At age 12 I’d had enough. Why would I a 12 year old girl want to train 25 hours a week, have no life and no friends (apart for other gymnasts) just to be bullied and put down? It was an easy choice, I woke up one morning and swore I was done and that I’d never go back. Since then I am now 18 and an athletics coach to teenagers and it makes me wonder what went wrong with the making of certain gymnastics coaches and how it was allowed to go on. Athlete A horrified me but I can’t lie and say I was surprised at all the covered up abuse, isn’t that what’s happening all over the world? The sport HAS to change before it starts loosing both its gymnasts and it’s fans

  62. Elizabeth

Athlete A was a heart wrenching documentary that showcased how broken the system was within gymnastics. As a former gymnast/coach this video should hopefully encourage parents to facilitate a conversation as to what is and is not appropriate touch. This should not be a one time conversation athletes need to know that they are supported in all realms. No longer should an athlete be the essential sacrificial lamb for their team to win. All of the young women are brave. The scary part is the ruling in the U.S that states that coaches will no long be held liable to report sexual abuse within the NCAA.

I saw the documentary . yeah Nassar will def get what’s coming to him in jail. the way he looks and his mannerisms would get him torn apart let alone and his case was high profile so he might not even survive day one in gp . I’m sure he’d be in isolation in the country . and he deserves whatever happens because he used a position of authority and prestige to exploit his victims. he’s lucky it wasn’t my sister because then my violent tendencies that I work hard to control would kick in full throttle and I probably would end up there for premeditated murder.

Oh wow !!! As the mum of a 20yo daughter who has BPD, ASD AND PTSD this is just fantastic!! What a way to explain the complexity of BPD. She has suffered since the age of 9yo, started self harm at this age. She has cut horrifically, refuses ANY type of treatment for wounds, inserts objects into wounds, head bangs, ODS, has been found on too of car parks about to jump, Tower Bridge ( wrong side of the railings and we live 60 miles away ) train station platforms !! She has been in and out of MH units since the age of 14 from a few days to months but it always beats her. She's currently 6 months into and intensive 12 month inpatient locked rehabilitation program which will then continue for at least another year in the community. She IS at this moment winning and beating those demons and I pray that with the high success rate they have of recovery that she becomes one of those successes. For the first time this week for years she said to me " mum I want to live I don't want to die" .....what a step !!! I think you are an inspiration Joe and I hope you continue on a positive journey with the right support around you. Its an awful illness and is strong but you CAN be stronger xxxx

It is horrific what those girls went through. But if you look back further and is touched on in the film is what Russia and Romania did to their gymnasts and other was utter torture and abuse on all levels. Families needed to get their children into programs so they could afford to live and the physical, mental abuse those children endure are beyond anything we even dare to consider today. Yet it was deemed normal. But you are right Miles. It is an awesome sport. It requires so much more than many other sports do as gymnastics is less “natural” to the human form. But a happy person always does better than unhappy. Athlete A should remind us that one single individual can make so much effect. It’s important to make that effect to improve not to cause farm, fear or abuse any one we have any control or power or ability to impose our feeling or desires on

I really love you Nile and I think your heart truly is in the right place and that you care for all gymnasts and all their experiences but I wish you would have had a video devoted just to responding to athlete A. I feel it unintentionally takes away from the depth and horror of what the film covered by following it with an everyday vlog. Even if you had just posted the two videos separately I think it would’ve been better. But this is just my opinion and I hope you see this comment just so you can take this into consideration when talking about similar issues in the future.
