I’m a gymnast who has major back problems due to my time at the gym, and I relate to this on an almost uncanny level. I’ve always wanted to be a competitive college level gymnast, but every year, year after painfully long year, my body just beat my soul into submission. I pushed through the fractures, the back arthritis, and the neck, ankle, and wrist sprains, but at the end of 3 months ago, I knew that if I continued, my body wouldn’t be able to function normally as I grew older. It really does feel like giving up a part of your soul when you leave your competitive self behind, something is constantly off, something very crucial always just...missing. After all, your entire life has been made up of the sport of gymnastics as it helps you find your closest friends, influence the very nature of who you are, and reshapes how you view the world, and’s gone. Just nothing there anymore. Over the last several months, I’ve come to terms with being unable to live up to my dream, but it still hurts to know that I could still compete collegiately if I wanted it bad enough, it would just hurt my body more than it already has. In the end, I think I’m choosing to stop gymnastics after high school for the better of my body, as I value being able to walk above competing, but it’s one of the most painful things that I’ve had to do. Sorry for the long comment, I just needed a place to get my thoughts together, as I’m still in the process of convincing myself it’s for the best.

I’m 11 years old. I am an athlete. I have suffered many injuries. I worry that someday I wont be able to come back to sports someday. I’ve broken three bones and when I was seven I broke, dislocated, and shattered my arm and have two surgeries. It was hard. I play softball, soccer, running, and strength training. I used to do gymnastics but the arm injury when I was 7 discouraged me. My arm has never been the same. But sometimes you have to give something up to find something new.

I just found your channel and it reminds me so much of when my younger sister (now 21) was on the preOlympic track (top four in either California or the whole US for her level at one point if I’m remembering correctly). We would watch you, Simone Biles, and so many other legendary gymnasts all the time and I could just see the fire of drive and admiration in her eyes. She eventually stopped due to many injuries and really mentally (and we later found out physically) abusive coaches. It was no longer the sport she loved and it was no longer a dream worth sacrificing her mental and physical health and other life opportunities for. The transition out was so hard for her and is still affecting her to this day I think... Thank you for being part of the biggest part of my little sister’s childhood. I cannot tell you how much respect I have for pro athletes especially gymnasts.

Hey Nile, it's not over. It's just time to open that next door. There are plenty of ways you can still continue to be involved in the sport even if you're not competing professionally anymore. You have a lot to contribute to others who may be trying to get into the gymnastics or step up their skills. And even though I am not a gymnast, I for one can wholeheartedly say that your videos and your journey has inspired me to continue improving and pushing myself in my fitness and flexibility goals and learning new skills. Best of luck to you in this next chapter. May God bless you always.

So well done- and GENEROUS OF SPIRIT: Nile for using his own personal tragedy he’s still working through (understandably) and all the other participants including his close inner circle (all committed to being upbeat when’s possible but this was as his Mom, Dad and sister says not possible to treat like other challenges they had been dealt), and the filmmakers including whoever edited the film ALL deserving so much CREDIT for doing this. I am sure it’s helped others in dark places, and will continue to do so. All involved esp Nile should be really proud of this film, and I hope it will be made available on many more platforms so it can reach even more people. I don’t know HOW to get this onto other platforms like NETFLIX, but hope the responses here on NLcameras will help. Maybe youtube could facilitate making this available on other platforms, as a public service and public health matter. It’s so well done, and that’s sadly not always the case with documentaries concerning this subject. Suicide is among the leading causes of death in the USA, where it’s usually listed as one of the “top 10” (occasionally falls to like 12th) causes of death yearly according to official government statistics (none yet circulated or tabulated about the pandemic, with many people having new pressures on them they don’t feel they did anything to deserve, just as Nile did nothing wrong; he tried to be humble with his prodigious talent and inspire others which he’s done... and continues to do). Kudos.

Tons of respect my man! I can understand that this had to be one of the most difficult decisions ever for you. However, I do believe that we will be hearing about you lots and lots more in the gymnastic world. I believe that you'd make and amazing coach to the youngsters. The video with Jack Stone simply convinced me of this! Imagine what a kid like Jack could achieve with you guiding him :o But that is of course entirely up to you. Whatever it is that you will do in the future, I am sure you will be great at it and I wish you the best of luck with that!! Thank you for bringing tons of intense exciting moments to us in competition and if you'd ask me, I'd say that you have achieved Legendary status! Looking forward to your next vlog!

Thank you for everything you have done for British gymnastics, but also thank you for highlighting your struggles with mental health. I would send your videos onto my sister’s partner after he attempted to do himself harm, and they really helped him through some dark times. I used to be a gymnast, nowhere near your level of course but I retired at age 13 because of injuries and not wanting to compete. I still loved gymnastics and obviously I still do, but I just did not want to compete anymore. I wished I could have continued on but the head coach was all about the winning. So I understand some of what you are feeling. I think this is the right time to retire for you though. After the neck surgery I was worried for you, but I did want to see you back in the gym. If you can get back in there enjoying it without the stress of competing at any level, I think the enjoyment would come back. There is always coaching though. Passing your knowledge on to the next generation.

this hit hard especially right now. I've been thinking alot about gymnastics. I started when I was going but we couldn't afford it anymore and I started again last year (age 13) which is really late. I was already set back and then with the first quarantine I lost so many skills I had to restart once again and now we're quarantined again and I just know I'll lose so many skills and so much strength and I've developed knee pain and I have a back injury and I just don't know if I'll be able to keep going for much longer. I might have to quit. Lol just typing the words "might have to quit" and thinking about quiting is making me cry. the one thing that makes me happy and basically my life my personality my identity everything about my life revolves around gymnastics. If I don't have that anymore who am I? I can call myself a gymnast but I don't do it anymore. I'll be "normal" I'll be sitting at home more then usual and I won't be able to say that im an athlete anymore. Ugh idk what to do.
