⛵️We are FINALLY done with this project!! #173
This is the second video we produce about our propeller shaft seal system. Are you curious to see more about it? Check this one: nlcameras.info/wiki/iqWZXWWN35K515w/video
We’re Duca and Roberta, a Brazilian couple that have bought a 44ft steel sailboat (Dinieper Tropic 1200, designed by Joubert and Nivelt) that was abandoned on the hard for 22 years in Guarujá, Brazil. We are on the mission of refitting her to travel the world taking our house with us!
Are you curious to know more about it? Don't forget to SUBSCRIBE and join us every MONDAY for a new episode of our journey!!

Not sure if it matters. But the washer you sanded down to hold the shaft in place. In the last video it was taken off from the propeller end.when pulling the shaft out. Keep up with the good work and progress. you are both inspiring people keep it up 👍🏻

For all the talk about learning about the system:- You did not tell us which bearing was the correct bearing for the system, which could be verified by the number on the bearing. Its not a good idea to reuse a bearing that was making noises the last time you took the boat out! The style of bearing is important and you had two different style of bearing bearings are generic, two bearings with the same style and numbers are the same. Call the manufacturer of the sealed system and verify you have the correct bearing for system and use new bearing???

Like in any disney cartoon, it seems both of you can dismantle and assemble the boat even while in the waters, and thats something. Best wishes always.

I sold bearings for about 16 years. The people warning about overfilling with grease are correct - only about 30% of the available space should be filled with grease. Overfilling causes the grease to churn and overheat. This can cause the grease to melt and separate with very bad results. So far no one has mentioned that converting a bearing from oil to grease changes the maximum speed it can do - sometimes by quite a bit. I don't know what size and brand bearing you are using, but you should seek the help of an engineer or at the very least google for something like "double row spherical roller bearing max speed". It may well be OK as the setup you have looks massively oversized for the job it is doing, but again it is hard to tell without actual sizes and loads.

its a good solid system good learning project. I have done so many drives like this I have lost count. but the systems I did were much larger. The guy who polished the shaft should have checked it for run out. Should be no more than .003 thousands of an inch. Dont beat your self up to bad for forgetting that retainer. one time I stuck two of the helical bearing on in the wrong direction. The bearings had to be heated to install and were $1,200 each. Boss was not a happy camper. The bearings were about about 31 cm x 7.5cm and were special swiss made bearings.

On the sheilded bearing is desighned to run for the life of the bearing. Hope that explains the seal. Often times we would leave the seal on one side as extra seal, and pry out the lube side.

Suggestions when assembly/diassambly always witness punch the components, this way you help maintain balance and ease reassembly. Also those thrust bearings should face each other to cancel the thrust, but absorbe the thrust in both dirrections, Bearings should be packed 30% of capacity. You can make berings run hot or evev fail by over packing. Use Hi Temp grease.

I hope you took pictures and wrote all those seal and bearing numbers down so you can procure backup parts to replace the boats inventory of replacement parts. With age all those parts may get harder and harder to find in the future. If you can't find replacements for all those parts in Brazil you may be able to find them in other countries, as you travel about. If I were going to change anything it would be those old style U-joints that were used to attach the boats transition to your prop shaft. Modern constant-velocity universal joints like used the half shafts of a front drive car would be more forgiving of alignment issues which you may encounter with the new motor. Ask the engineer who helps you with the engine change over about this, as alignments of this nature are very challenging. Your old motor may have not been aligned properly and may have contributed to vibration loosening of bolts, leaking of oil seals and bearing failure. Also the shafts that connect transmission all the way back to and including propeller will have to be in balance to prevent vibrations. Any parts that were changed out can cause balance issues bearings, bolts, nuts, washers, u-joints, Propeller. I know you didn't want to hear any of this, but if you want to get rid of the noise it's important...

Are you going to show the prop shaft being reinstalled? You might change the bearings in the universal joint, or at least check for play. Its possible for the UJ to come apart in use, and you should consider protecting against the shaft exploding into the cabin. How about adding a metal plate to the floorboard above it, and bolting that down? Or some sort of inverted U bracket over the shaft. I think that bearing you put in is designed to take the axial (or thrust) load from the propeller. The notchy one you discarded, not so sure. Keep up the good work

I liked the solution given to the holes of the new bearing, now you can regrease it. As it seems the whole shaft assembly is directly bolted to the boat without any sound cushioning (e.g. Rubber flange), so the system may produce some noise.

Careful with your new grease zert! You CAN over grease bearings....its actually a pretty common failure point. When too much grease is packed into a bearing the grease will overheat and break down. Granted a bearing that is over greased will last longer than one that is under greased.... I wouldn't give that fitting more than a pump or two every year, or perhaps two initially. The gland between the outside of the shaft housing and the inner hull housing is a different story. That's designed to prevent seawater intrusion and can be purged periodically by pumping in grease. Hopefully there's some recommendations in some of the documentation you have for the system. If it were my boat I would remove the prop and outer housing every time I hauled out and pump a cartridge through and then reseal everything on the outer housing. Overall AWESOME job!!! Love the meticulous nature and teamwork of you to. Truly inspirational! Great work! Just don't go wild on those grease fittings....
