Toxic Takeaways: The Problem With Ross from Friends

The Take is launching a brand new merch line! Check out our limited edition designs available on the Merch Shelf now before they’re gone: the-take.myteespring.co/ | Ross Geller, played by David Schwimmer, is one of TV’s original "nice guys." Yet ever since Friends ended in 2004, we’ve been able to take a more critical look at Ross, and spot some of the many red flags we once disregarded. Through this retrospective lens, we can see Ross as an example of male fragility. He’s a guy who’s so preoccupied with proving that he’s a ‘man,’ he often ends up overcompensating and even hurting others in the process. And yet, after ten seasons of questionable behavior, Ross ends up getting his dream girl anyway. Here’s our Take on the many Toxic Takeaways from Ross Geller’s story, and the lessons he can teach us about how not to be a good friend.

I see how you included the guy from the bar but I actually don’t think it’s that bad. So p, just hear me out. Yes, it was bad of him to not give her the note and everything, but before this, *Rachel* was the one to ask to put his love life on hold. During the time they’re raising Emma, SHE goes off and starts getting numbers. Now, it was only 2 guys (I think), but it’s the fact that she told him to put his life on hold and yet she still goes out and talks to guys. He shouldn’t be getting in the way of that but I’m just saying it’s unfair

The one thing I would say in defense of Ross regarding Susan and Carol, I don’t know why he’s being expected to be ok with the person his wife cheated on him with. That would take a while to be ok with, but it seems like he’s expected to be fine with being cheated on right away.

First, Ross CARRIED the last seasons of Friends, second, Ross was always the most relatable person on Friends, what you call "toxic" also can be called being a human, and third, they WERE on a break!

Cheating is cheating. Gender has no part on what and how the one being cheated on feels. Carol cheated on him during their wedding. And Ross was still accepting of her decisions post divorce. Had she cheated on with a guy, Ross wouldn't be friends with that guy, then why would he like Susan? Just because she's a woman? Ross still participated a lot for the sake of his child and tolerated Susan's attempts at being mean towards him. He had his flaws but he is nowhere near as toxic as he is portrayed in this video. He has done a lot of sweet things for everyone throughout the series without expecting anything in return, not even compliments. He had his baggage but doesn't make him a bad person.

    1. Rachel also thwarted all of Ross's other relationships. She even flew in London with the intention of ruining his wedding 2. Rachel also makes fun and bellitles Ross's work. In fact everyone does 3. It's not toxic to antagonize the woman that got between him and his wife ruining their wedding. A lot of people do that. In fact, Rachel also does that with Mindy in the earlier episodes. 4. Chandler didn't care about him hooking up with Janice. And technically Ross started going out with Charlie first. It was Joey that made a move on her before Ross had the chance to 5. You say Ross uses his emotional damage with Carol as an excuse to manipulate Rachel. Phoebe also uses the trauma with her mother to manipulate everyone in the group 6. Ross's growth comes in the final season. Where he realizes he is being possesive with Rachel and vows to improve himself and even support her relationship with Joey. He also realizes that the job in Paris is better for her and he lets her go. And she choses to come back So what I am saying is, most of your points (especially for the first half of the show) are stretches. You could call all the characters in the show toxic with the right scenes. Or you could call none of them. Ross, as I said, did get more immature in the second half of the show for comedic effect but not more than Phoebe or Chandler in the first half. Or even Rachel But of course you don't talk about those because your purpose isn't objective analysis. But building a narrative against "toxic masculinity"

  18. Tv Maniac

    Tv Maniac

    7 uur geleden

It's obvious to me what happened with Ross. Originally, chandler was supposed to be the emotionally impaired comedic relief that wasn't confortable with his masculinity But then the writers developed chandler, and he became the married everyman. The voice of logic. Which was Ross's original role. So to not have two similar characters and fill the void, they degraded Ross into the immature whiny one

You totally skipped the parts when Ross was the sweetest person. You don't understand the writers designed the characters to be mean at particular situation because that's a human nature . No matter how much we deny it we sometimes unknowingly may act mean . Yeah I agree ross did have a lot of toxic moments but he also had some kind moments, for eg :- when he walked carol to the aisle , bought phoebe a bike , lend monica money , stopped dating Bcuz Rachel was pregnant , etc . So he had good sides AND bad sides which makes him normal like any other person .

When i watched the first time, i hated him. Years later when i re-watched it from the beginning, i actually saw how extremely well written he is. He's a toxic person, masquerading as a a victim. And of course David Schwimmer did an extraordinary work as portraying him. He has the BEST face expressions by far in the series. So in the end i still dislike Ross. I would never be his friend in real life. But i love the character in the show. Since he demonstrate that personality really well.

THIS VEDIO IS TOXIC!! Yes Ross had some toxic things about him but so does all the other characters. And that's the thing about humans. We all have flaws. He is depicting a character only ( which is relatable to the typical men of the society ) . But that doesn't mean you guys should throw hatred at him. He is a good actor and he played his role very well. If you are talking about toxicity in FRIENDS character then talk about everyone because everyone was flawed in some way or other. Don't be bias. His character had some good things too. For instance..he took responsibility of his baby with Carol while Carol cheated on him with Susan when they were married and Still he walked her to the aisle in their marriage. No men would do that. 😂 He bought Phoebe a bicycle when she told him that she never had one. He genuinely cared and supported Rachel at the time of her pregnancy. He really loved her in his own flawed way and so does Rachel. Rachel was flawed too. She went to stop his wedding with Emily when she knew they both loved each other. She advices Bonnie to be bald because she was jealous and insecure. So all characters have both sides. DONT FRAME HIM LIKE THIS OR ATLEAST IF YOU ARE DOING IT, DO THE SAME VEDIO FOR OTHER CHARACTERS AS WELL. 💯👍

There really needs to be a proper comparison between this video and the older video of yours - Ross and Rachel: Love worth waiting for. There are exact scenes from the show that you have interpreted in two different ways. For instance Ross not getting the marriage annulled has been explained as an 'unconscious sign of his repressed feelings' in the 'Love worth waiting for' video which is stated in very neutral, even a sympathetic tone for the tragedy of this long-drawn romance. In the current video the same scene is given as an example of Ross's toxic selfishness. Which is the correct interpretation? No wonder audiences are polarized on this matter.

You know what, he was the kindest character on the show, Joey the "show darling" always said inappropriate things to Monica and Rachel and made them uncomfortable and was a leech always relaying on others for money and food and Chandler always made fun of his friends in a condescending way like phoebe for example, he was nice to Joey just because he liked having a roommate who is a womenaizer, and back to Ross, Rachel really messed with his head, she always ruined perfect relationships he had just because she just felt jealous and abandoned when he was happy with someone else, she flew to his flipping wedding in London and ruined it, Rachel is spoiled and had to have everything by crying or acting vulnerable , and his first wife is a cheater, she cheated on him while they were married and forced him to only see his first born on occasion, so please stop acting all perfect, each character on the show has both good and bad in them, but Ross seriously was a good friend he was kind, generous and caring, the situation with Emily was bad but he really tried to make up for it but again Rachel wasn't helpful at all, the character didn't even once phone Emily to try to backup Ross and say anything to his then wife to help that mess that she caused and didn't help Ross when Emily asked that he never see her again, he isn't toxic what so ever, Rachel is 100% the most toxic character on the show.

Finally, not every character whether it's on friends or in reality has to fit into the mold of perfection, every one is unique and should be accepted and we should to be tolerant with each other, human beings are not cloth you can cut and trim to fit you or anyone else. Plus over analyzing the characters like that will make you hate this show or any other show you watch, just watch it and enjoy, why ruin a flipping FICTIONAL show you watch, stop using the characters from friends to describe your personalities and likings for the love of God.

Ross is the best character on friends both as a friend and as a committed partner, only flaw about him was how he was so gullible when it came to Rachel, you're just framing Ross as the bad character cause talking about toxic masculinity is a popular thing now, but how about you do video on Joey and how he treated women like crap and him sexually harassing his female friends all the time, now this would be more convincing you won't be needing to twist any actual events that happened on the show to make them fall in your narrative like you just did with this video.

THANKS FOR THIS VIDEO!!!! Ever since I started watching friends, I have hated Ross because of his toxicity and narcissism towards Rchel. She deserves so much more !! It is comforting to see somebody else thinks te way I do. I understand Ross went trough some bad shit that was really traumatizing to him, I wish the show had focused on his improvement (as they did with Rachel, who had more dreams apart from getting a partner) rather than making real his childhood dreams with her. I was really upset when they ended up together, in my opinion it would have been much more realistic and mature if they had understood they just didn't work as a couple. Thanks for this videos, I absolutely love them!

If you're saying Ross as an imperfect person, then who was the perfect.? Can you tell me... Like the way you analyzed Ross so biased , make some effort to analyse the other characters too.. I'm sure you will find more flaws in other characters. This show is too old, and yeah that's right not too old in some aspects. I can't write each and every good point about Ross, but he did so many good things.. Ross is not my fav character, I loved each and every character the same way. Honestly all the friends are bad people although Ross may be one of the worst. Let’s not forget Rachel’s quip belittling Ross as a girl after he gives in to his feelings to Sandy or Chandler gay bashing. The conflict with Susan is also understandable because she did steal his wife from him and essentially demanded everything. Ross apparently was a better person before his first divorce/betrayal. He needed therapy and a support group to address it but never got it. His lashing out at work was definitely a red flag and he gets a pill.

Other points are just nitpicking and trying to put scenes to fit the whole scenario, e.g. when ross scolds phoebe for thinking the cat was her mom: he did it because there was a boy who owns the cat and is looking for it. But over all, i do agree that ross is a man-child, and lashes out when his comfort zone is threatened. Watching this just reaffirms how brilliant the writing of the show is that a character was written so consistently, that he displays all these underlying characteristics the audience didnt even notice at the time.

Thank you! I was a kid when "Friends" first aired, but looking at Ross and Rachel's story line as an adult, it's so disturbing that they eventually end up together. Rachel gave up her own growth and happiness to become Ross' ideal image of what a woman meant for him. That's not romantic, it's tragic and creepy. Reminds me of how Jane Eyre goes back to Mr. Rochester even after she gains independence from him and learns to be happy on her own.

Quick note: that's how comedy works. It's taking truths about the world and finding a way to deflate it. Pennywise is scary only to those who couldn't laugh at Bozo. No duh the Friends actually suck, the point is everyone sucks, but things can suck a bit less when you don't have to trek through life alone. You're not uncovering some hidden truth, you were just too young at the time to fully appreciate the over all joke, and now your mad cause YOU took things too seriously.

I was with you right up to "The Break." It's not a "Pause," or a "Slow Down." Men are not mind readers, and if that wasn't what she wanted, she shouldn't have said it. Plus, he didn't use it as an excuse to sleep with somebody else, it was, in his mind, the lowest point of his life. When that happens you stop caring about the choices you make. And Rachel manipulated Ross every bit as much as he did her. Sabotaged his relationship with Julie, manipulated him to break up with Bonnie only to add stipulations following. They were the worst part of the show, but they both sucked.

Exactly my feelings. A better ending would have been that Ross had moved to Paris. Respect Rachel for once.

Friendly reminder that Ross… • Walked his ex-wife down the aisle after her parents refused to do so • Bought Phoebe a bike when he heard how she never owned one as a child - then taught her how to ride it • Loaned his little sister money when she was broke and told her there was no deadline for paying him back • After causing an accident which injured a little girl, sold cookies for her door-to-door to win her a trip to space camp and when he couldn’t win the trip for her, set up her own special space camp in Joey & Chandler’s apartment • Bought Joey’s porcelain dog as a gift so that Joey wouldn’t have to return everything when he lost his DOOL job • Stepped in to escort Rachel to prom when her date stood her up • Searched all night for Chandler when Chandler disappeared before his and Monica’s wedding • Agreed to not date anyone when Rachel asked him not to towards the end of her pregnancy, understanding that she was under enormous stress from the pregnancy and therefore allowed to be irrational • Told Carol that if her parents didn’t want her to marry Susan then it was their problem, and that she deserved to marry the woman she loved • Rescued his friends who were stuck in the middle of nowhere, then drove back home alone because Rachel didn’t want him to go with them • Gave up the opportunity to be on TV to help Rachel who had a broken rib (and then went to the hospital with her) • Told Joey that he could act on his feelings for Rachel • Most of the times, he was the only rational character on the show and the only one not afraid to speak his mind (e.g. when Phoebe thought that her mother was inside that cat, told Joey to take that cab driver role even if it was just a two-line part) • Refused to give up on his friendship with Rachel when Emily asked it to do so • Decided to stop playing his sound (lol) at Central Perk so that Phoebe could go back to singing • Gave the “Frankie Say Relax” t-shirt back to Rachel because he knew how much she loved that t-shirt and respected that she was moving on I hate how everyone these days shits all over Ross while completely ignoring all the shitty actions of every other character on the show, like Chandler being the one to make the most homophobic jokes or mock Ross and Joey whenever they did anything slightly feminine like the episode when Joey moves in with Janine or kissing Joey’s girlfriend, or Joey’s misogyny, or Rachel attempting to ruin almost every one of Ross' relationships such as Julie, Bonnie etc. Also people always act as if Rachel was too good for Ross or better than but she really wasn’t. I would say she was even more jealous than Ross. And the whole point of him not respecting her job, did anyone respect his? Ross’ profession of being a palaeontologist is one of the main jokes throughout the entire series as he is constantly mocked for it even though it matters to him. Wanted to point this all out because everyone seemingly forgets and it’s really bloody annoying! Also, SUSAN WAS HORRIBLE TO ROSS!! I’m so confused as to how people make it out to be the other way when she literally acts as if he was just the sperm donor when it comes to his own child, like not even wanting Ben to have his surname but hers. If Susan was a guy would Ross be expected to like the man his wife cheated on him with?? No!!! Susan was so entitled. How nice of Ross to even go to their wedding. And he didn’t cheat on Carol what on earth, she had already left him for Susan when he kissed Phoebe?? It’s like The Take made this video without even watching the show And obviously it was literally said in the show the reason Ross couldn’t have gone to Paris with Rachel was because of his son BEN. If he went you’d all say he was neglecting him!! Ross can never win

The fact that Ross is toxic is the joke. If they were all perfect wonderful people, it would be a boring show.

Love this channel! It's got the insight to talk about anything but moreover it's not afraid to show their true feelings. Ross and Rachel were meant to be? Not at all. But maybe that was what the audience needed at the time. Does not make it healthy and does not make it true. It was a toxic relationship that would not be liked today, and would not be celebrated at all.

Off the top of my head, I remember that he... -tried to kiss his cousin -made a huge deal out of his child’s nanny being male -refused to get an annulment, just because it would hurt his ego (it’s not Rachel’s fault that he got married three times) -completely changed his feelings about a girl, just because she shaved her head -belittled Rachel’s career and attempts to do well in it -tried (and succeeded) to get Rachel to give up her dream job for him -dated his student -let his parents hate Chandler for something he did for years -got annoyed when his toddler played with a doll -was possessive of Rachel, even when they weren’t together

A good example of how fragile Ross his is the episode “The One With Chandler in a Box” Ross finds out Rachel exchanged a necklace he gave her and rather than understand it was gift and the recipient is allowed to do what they want with the gift, he spends Thanksgiving shaming and attacking her for exchanging the necklace. The rest of the friends have had Rachel exchange their gifts before and got laughs out of it but Ross completely loses it because he thinks Rachel must love and cherish everything I do with or for her because she is mine.

This video speaks as though he is a real person, and makes him an evil guy. IT WAS THE WRITING!!!! Which I am sure it was not controlled by people looking to put a man's best foot forward. The entire purpose of the show was to emasculate men and let women take the traditional male role. Screwed up huh?

Fragile Male Masculinity? His first wife was a closeted homosexual who used him, was he supposed to be like "Hey thats cool, glad you found yourself!" which in the end he kind of was. The Rachel character was a maniac physco, who sabotaged all his relationships after she dumped him, including breaking up his second marriage. She then threatens, without consulting him, to take his daughter away to Paris! Male Fragility? If you reverse the Gender Roles, a women would have had a nervous breakdown. I don't like the idea that now if Men get crapped on they are just supposed to "take it" and if you don't you're "fragile".
