BIG MAMA IS SHRINKING! (sorta.😉) | Spring Lambing 2021 | Vlog 436

We are almost done lambing!!!
Which means today, I can take some time and look at how far we've come.
Big Mama is shrinking (slightly...) but still bringing me some daily giggles.
Her daughter with the broken leg is improving daily...
Carissa and I also took some time to organize and CIDR our next breeding group due to lamb in September!
Crazy how as we wrap up lambing, we are already gearing up for another.

Just thinking: If you keep a "To Do" List or a "Want to do" List somewhere - and one page is for times when you have to call the vet to the farm - add little mama to the vet list. Either she is just really unique - which I love - or something is off. She's doing fine, no sign of problems, so not worth a call out. But if a vet is coming, worth a few minutes to ask...what do you think?

Why do you have so many problems? Knock on wood but in eight years I've never had the problems you have. For sure my operation isn't as big as yours but in eight years I've had one ewe die from hypocalcemia but her lambs were pretty much weaned and I had a first timer drop an unformed fetus about thirty minutes before she dropped two healthy lambs. That's it and I don't do all the doctoring you do either. This isn't criticizing you, not at all. I'm just confused as to your problems despite all the up to the minute care. I do C-DT, calcium before lambing and only every now and then worm if fecals show loads and then I use prohibit. I have St. Croix and Dorpers that I register as Dorpers not Royal whites.

Suggest you tag a video which cover an issue you might want to refer back to with a label for example, preg tox, vaccine, or any issue covered of interest . Then you can just search your categories and the video will come back up for you as well as anyone looking for preg tox, or natural breeding etc.

Are all RFID tags yellow? If they have different colors, you could color tag by month born. When you only want May ewes (for vaccination, breeding, etc. ..) and they are mixed with June ewes. You don’t have to scan ALL of them. Or different color for different breeds & crosses.

This would be great for kids (especially 4H kids). If you had a room or two to rent near or on the property (maybe partner w/someone). You could control the dates and # of people that can participate. I would totally pay for that type of experience. Like a dude ranch.

Okay, I've watched enough videos now to realize you are breeding for meat. I'm not sure how you ended up on my recommended youtube videos but here you are. As I said in another post, I'm a spinner. I process raw wool for spinning then knitting. So I'm interested in shepherding from that perspective. That said, I've found your videos absolutely fascinating. I'm so moved by how strongly you feel about the results of lambing, while knowing that, in the background, you are sending these lambs off for meat. Understand: I am not judging about that. I get it. I'm just fascinated to witness that paradox. (Feels like a paradox to me....) Have you ever brought in someone who knows fleece to take a look at your fleeces as you shear them? I see that you just stuff it all into a bag and send it off for bulk sales. But I *so* want to see the details of the fleece-- how much crimp? (There was one video I saw where you showed the crimp.) Do you have a local mill you could send at least the best of your fleeces off for spinning into yarn? And depending on how good some of them are, there might be people (like me) who would be interested in buying a raw fleece from you. I'm in the States, so that probably wouldn't work, but as you're shearing, if you had someone there to say: "Oh THIS one is sellable to hand-spinners..." Wish I lived closer. (I'm outside of Washington DC USA.) Next time you shear, please take closer-up pictures of the actual fiber.

    • Jillaine Smith

      Jillaine Smith

      14 dagen geleden

P.S. (and in part given the response from Iris below), you *might* want to look into seeing if there is a local fibershed or equivalent in your region. There is a movement underway to get more local wool out to the world, with a focus on a more local economy. See That one in particular was started in California, but I know there's a New England based group, by a different name that is at least somewhat closer to you. I do know from the one I'm involved with (Chesapeake Fibershed), that one of the challenges is finding local mills who can process the fleece into yarn or other material.

    • Iris
