We use HDBaseT at work all the time. I really wish it was more affordable, because it would be so useful in so many situations. Even just in your home AV setup, it could take the place of so much complicated cabling AND you can run it through a switch and route it wherever you want!

With the advent of streaming, it's cheaper overall just to use wifi to stream directly to the tv you're watching. The video preloads into RAM, so there's no lost quality over wiring.

I associated the 13W3 connectors with Sun gear (and another variant with 4 coax connectors for monochrome). DVI was a sort of predecessor to HDMI, with a chunkier connector (in a few variants, for digital, analog, and combined: the digital variant is the same signalling as HDMI). There was also a welter of other weird ones, like the DE-9 monochrome that PCs used, or the DIN-13 monochrome used by Atari. Commodore had a nonstandard size 23-pin D-sub style connector as well.

Anyone have memories of scart just being a pain in the butt? I swear they were always extremely awkward to plug in (like usb but 100 times worse) and the angle on the cables always went the wrong way causing an extreme bend. Plus the cables were always very short.

While it was a (somewhat) common computer interface (especially on Apple devices), it is less widely known that Firewire / i.Link / IEEE-1394 was used for transporting compressed SD and HD video signals between video devices. This is how I was able to record and play back ISDB-T and ISDB-S programs on D-VHS deck and RCA Scenium HDD deck from/to my (JDM) Sony TV circa 2005-2010. In the U.S., some cable boxes supported Firewire for a period of time if I remember correctly. DV camcorders also supported the interface.

Working AV i love my DVI. Just for the screw on connection making it bomb proof if equipment has to be moved during production. That DP is locking is its only grace, but i can not get over how many times there is a problem with hand shakes getting missed. But our newer mixer all come with DP for bigger resolution. Nice informative video!

Missed connectors? The DVI! The best cable for monitor usage for 1080p and lower down than HDMI ever will be. Dual link allows you more bandwidth than the ever classic and very standard HDMI 1.4 standard gives you, so if you had spent your DP ports, having a spare DVI-D would do better than a HDMI in a computer situation anyway... And they never fall out on their own either with the screwed connections.

I feel like VGA cables were under utilised. Why weren't they used instead of component, composite, SCART, etc for analogue AV equipment in the 90s. The amount of fiddling about and investing in quality cables to deal with analogue signals we had to do back then. But there was this VGA cable that didn't have to be expensive that did an amazing job. Even now it's capable of 1080p 60Hz. It would have been perfect for pre HDMI DVD players way back. I only realised how good they were when I recently started using an old VGA lcd screen I had knocking about.

SCART was great. Advanced VCRs even had multiple SCART sockets so you could daisy-chain devices (e.g. consoles, or even DVD players) as earlier TVs usually only had one SCART. That also let you rip DVDs to VHS, or copy VHS tapes between two VCRs, etc. The downside of SCART was that the pins were wobbly and flexible. The amount of SCART cables I've had with pins that fell out or bent because they wobbled out of position while trying to insert it... In the UK, both of my Samsung smart TVs still support SCART input.

The thing with SCART is that it took off so fast in Europe that we almost never had RF or component on early consoles and VCR's such as the NES. They were all SCART, which was natively an RGB signal. Imagine my surprise at how shit US TV picture looked when I first got there. Tough this is the consolation prise for having all of our games run 20% slower due to PAL's refresh rate.
