True Story: Years ago, there was a Dutch explorer called Able Tasman, and he went off to the South Seas in search of new lands and new treasures. He discovered Tasmania (because they named it after him), he found New Zealand, the Fiji Islands, Papau New Guinea and the Solomon Islands. *HE MISSED AUSTRALIA*

Indigenous Australians invented and were the first in so many things, like..........um..........ah............But, they lived in one of the harshest lands for over 30 thousand years, that's pretty good. If people never landed in Australia. The Australian Indigenous people would be the same as 200 years ago, or 10000 years ago. The rest of the world would would have supersonic jets, internet, modern medicine, vehicles, people on the moon, rovers on Mars, the Large Hedron Collider...etc, but throwing sticks at animals is some how better??? We are a weird animal, humans....

Most likely to make you dead if it attacks you. All perfectly acceptable meanings of "most deadly." There are probably others as well.

Of course Cook discovered Australia - the word discover does not mean the first to find something, but instead it means 'the one who "uncovers" the subject to the rest of the world' - neither the Chinese, nor the Dutch, nor even the aborigines, 'dis'-covered, that is, 'uncovered' Australia to the rest of the world. Had any of these other peoples 'dis'-covered Australia, Australia would already have been extensively known about in Europe - it was Cook who did this!

I'm so glad that SF mentioned not only the myth of Cook "discovering" Australia but also the fact that he did NOT hold the rank of Captain at the time and was merely a lieutenant*. Centuries before Cook arrived there were the Chinese, Malays, and Dutch. * Cook was granted the rank of Captain a couple of voyages later.

    • Deepsea steve

@Shane Wright Um no, post captain was the rank achieved after master and commander. It was not an honorary rank at all and you could not achieve your post in the navy without ever having set foot aboard a ship. As for Captain Cook yes he was a lieutenant by rank but as he had command of the vessel he is referred to as captain. I’ve been a seafarer for 30 years if your wondering

@Shane Wright I beg to differ. On return from his second voyage, Cook was promoted to the rank of post-captain and given an honorary retirement from the Royal Navy. Post-captain is an obsolete alternative form of the rank of captain in the Royal Navy.

A couple of years ago, when No Such Thing as a Fish was touring Australia, I went to see them in Melbourne. During the intermission, as it was wrapping up and I was waiting around to go back in, I was standing next to some random guy. Suddenly, Colin Lane walks up with something hidden under his jacket. He says to the guy “Take these inside, I’ll go get the rest.” He opens his jacket to reveal dozens of small packets of chips which he conspiratorially gives to the other guy, who then stuffs them into his own jacket. Then they both nod and walk off in opposite directions.

I'm guessing the "non-drunk driver" award is an inexpensive way to make people complain less when they get pulled over for random breathalyzer stops. That's not what news reports say, but I find it hard to believe that drivers would care more about the minuscule chance of winning a bit of cash than the comparatively high chance of getting arrested and fined a lot of cash.

That’s exactly it. It doesn’t actually discourage drink driving. Nobody thinks about winning that raffle before getting in the car, they think about the fines and losing their licence. But it stops sober drivers bitching and moaning at police every time they get pulled over by coppers for RBT.

@I Am , I Said I've read Dark Emu too and while it's an interesting hypothesis it's widely disputed including by the indigenous community. I've also done several trips from Victoria, through SA, and up through central Australia. I've also worked in a remote community. I think you need to go back and read my original comment. It's not impossible for indigenous people to get a job now but there are still widely held preconceived prejudices that make it harder than for white people. If you think the entire view of a national population completely changes in a 50year period you very much are a deluded activist. Maybe try spending some time in rural Australia and listening to some opinions of indigenous Australians there. Racism there is still very much thriving. 1972 is the modern era. You're not a member of the Young Liberals by any chance are you? You can keep minimising the effects of things like the white Australia policy but that is the perfect example of a situation where it was written into the laws of this country to attempt to remove indigenous culture entirely, THAT WAS LESS THAN ONE GENERATION AGO. That's not a "mythical dragon". Because YOU personally aren't effected by something doesn't mean it's not real.

    • I Am , I Said

      I Am , I Said

      4 dagen geleden

@Hayreddin Barbarossa well i've read that interesting novel Dark Emu.... also read the Burke & Wills journal many years ago before we did our uluru road trip, because i love history. I also know some aboriginal activists in sydney and have many spritied discussions with them. I'm not denying a dark past, but i'm suggesting it's being repainted with a limited palette. like feminism, who achieved the equality they craved, 30 years on they are actually *worse* now than before. I'm seeing a similar trend in relations with our indigenous peoples, and many of them take cues from the USA, a different situation entirely. I'm a sympathetic ally, but not a deluded activist seeking to slay a mythical dragon. and don't tell me that nowadays it's impossible to get a job due to the colour of your skin, this is exactly the type of argument that ignores the modern era and pretends we are still in 1972.

    • Hayreddin Barbarossa

      Hayreddin Barbarossa

      4 dagen geleden

@I Am , I Said "setbacks" that's an interesting way of terming genocide. In Tasmania there are no full blooded indigenous people left after being either killed or "bred out" of existence. Around Australia up until 60 years ago it was policy to remove indigenous children from their families. You've made some wildly vague claim with no supporting evidence which is highly questionable. I'd say that there is not one single culture that has "thrived" when forced to adapt to a way of life that is completely 180° opposite to their own. Particularly when the colour of your skin could get you arrested on sight. When it makes it almost impossible to get a job. These aren't things that are consigned to history. There is still parts of society that still think the white Australia policy should still be in place. As well as that the last indigenous people to have contact with Europeans was in 1968. 1 generation to go from a completely traditional way of life to today's society. You can have an opinion but at least do a little research into what you're talking about.

@Sophie Vasiliadis Oh right, of course. We had a topic on New Zealand as well. It was years ago, so I was confusing the two. They're of course completely different topics, although many of the current issues are shared among both groups, as well as in other indigenous populations. Similar issues arrive with the Greenlandic people here in Denmark as well.

@Dirty Poul that's brilliant! From what I hear Denmark is a pretty great country. A small note, which you might already know, is that that movie was based on New Zealand Maori who are a different group of people then Australia's First nations people.

In high school in Denmark about 5 years ago, English classes included topics on English language majority countries. One of them was on Australia and the focus was mostly literature about aboriginal heritage. Like analyzing Once Were Warriors and short stories on aboriginal religion. Details are a bit hazy as I haven't slept well the past couple of days. But I'm quite proud of the classes I've attended in our educational system here in Denmark.

@Hayreddin Barbarossa Kinda. It's fun to lord over with how superior I am by arrogantly displaying drinking preferences. Now excuse me while I smoke this cigarette, down a shot of hard liquor, and take one more hit from my bowl. lol I just don't like beer and parodying how you guys talk about other beers (like there's a difference) is hilarious.

@Bullshit Man Yup, their ABC always comes at issues from the Left. In terms of politics, it hacks on the Libs and Labor from the Left. Just look at the types it employs e.g. Benji "Hate f*ck" Law, Osman "white people are getting f*cked!' Faruqi etc. etc. The irony is the Left loves their ABC even as it gives away Leftist content for free, thus helping undercut and strangle Fairfax/Nine. Lol

@BestAverageGaming Your opinions are just a regurgitation of some NLcameras poser? Why am I not surprised? Nothing in those God-awful videos (thanks, now my suggestions will prolly be spammed with moronic political vids) demonstrated that The Project is not left leaning. Out of hundreds of stories and interviews, a few not pouring total sh*t on the Libs is not evidence of leaning to the Right. Even Bolt or Credlin or Jones or Murray praise Labor sometimes. But The Project usually hacks on Labor and the Libs from the Left. Just as Bolt or Credlin or Jones or Murray et al. excoriate the Coalition from the Right. Whatsherface is even married to Prirate Pete, who's as big a leftist as they come. But if you're still wanting a 100% Lefty wank circle, go read the 'diverse' bunch of opinions on the HuffPo. As for the rest of the videos, they were just an annoying, know-nothing smart arse mouthing off. Try. Harder.

@J W Fellow Aussie, just want to say you made great arguments here. Unfortunately such a large contingent of the left in Australia are so woefully authoritarian, that they just want to shut free speech down whenever they disagree with someone - through any means including censorship, smear campaigns and violence. And I agree. While Rupert might have a media empire, it's obvious there will be some bias in reporting. That's how private companies operate. But the taxpayer funded ABC, on every screen and radio in Australia, doesn't even try to be fair and unbiased anymore and should be defunded entirely.

@BestAverageGaming The fact that you seem to think The Project bashes Labor like it bashes the Coalition is so hilarious I can barely type for laughing so hard. 😂😂😂😂😂😂 It speaks volumes about your ideological leanings. Labor has existed since before federation and has historically done poorly at national level, regardless of what parties they have faced, because voters didn't like them. Your delusion that it's because your fellow citizens are mindless drones voting the way a media proprietor's newspapers suggest (except for all the times when they don't, utterly blowing away your thesis lol) is quite sad. Enjoy Little Kev's pity party. Lol
