The TRUTH about Buying a CATAMARAN. Don't be LIED TO..

Thank you to our patrons for supporting this video. This video was not sponsored and is purely my own opinion. I wonder at the size and agility of the cat which has been placed amongst the pigeons.
This video took quite a bit of work to pull together, we did about 10 revisions and I'm still not 100% happy with it but it goes a long way towards describing what I think is a good and safe multihull sailing philosophy.

Sailing La Vagabonde the sailing show that isn't really about sailing and is more like the Kardashians hanging out on a boat... Can you all do me a favour and share this to every sailing group and forum on the planet. Worked my clacker off getting this one done and also its the best advice I can possibly give. Lowkey trying to change an industry lol.

@Cal B. I agree. 5 or 20 knots only becomes really important if you hit something like a log or container in the middle of the night etc and go flying off the boat etc... That is a safety factor but it's the same for all boats in that respect.

    • Cal B.

@Mark Gray I agree with you. What I was trying to say (poorly) was more about speed being a factor (and I think it is), but speed should certainly not be the only factor, or the most important.

I was thinking about getting a performance boat bot it doesn’t have air conditioning. Do you guys have A/C? If not, how do you handle the heat on hot rainy nights when you need to keep the hatches closed? Excellent vid, by the way.

I enjoyed your video on this i have always gone with the if its fast enough to get you out of the way of trouble you don't have to race it just to get from a to b im looking in to having an F39r built potential for very high speeds or pottering along the boats name will be Storm Runner. As i raced high speed dinghys as a kid and hate getting stuck out in storms or worse heavy rain with zero wind. But going sailing in as a woman in a wheelchair omg i always get the heavy slow boat that handles like its partly sunk

I find it odd to advocate speed and performance so much when there are way more slow monohulls and fat cats sailing the world. Since when is safety found in speed. I’d rather arrive a day late and be well rested, laundry done, boat washed and not worry about going food shopping the minute I arrive at the other end.

Phew. What a waffle. First I thought it was going to be 1 minute of Aussie nasal bad-grammared intro, then it became 2, 3, 4, but he kept going. Jump to about 10:00 and he'll start talking about specifics. The title's insufficient too. It's about buying a cat for ocean travel, not for what most people do with their recreational vessels. Three minutes of information squeezed into 22:32. 'If that's your design parameters...'. Grammar, mate. Unfortunately, it's a ramble. If only he wrote up a few salient points. :-(

Silent Solar sails...AC all the time...what humidity...need I say more? The "cheap" version will do ~8-12 kts all day/night. The upgraded one does something like 20+ kts.... Main question(s)...what's your max speed without wind? What's your diesel burn-rate whilst keeping cool? I'm a princess...still... What's your (annual) upkeep on sails/halyards/diesel devices/mechanics/ ? Their failure rate? AC motors "never" fail.

Bold name, dramatic opening and great cinematography (as usual)... but did you really “ruffle some feathers”? Not sure.. is it a revelation that production charter cat is built around king-size beds and interior volume and that would sacrifice performance? Nah.. same applies to the charter-focused monohull btw. Also seems there is another missing aspect (on top of design parameters) of built quality/ systems setup/redundancy required for the blue water sailing vs great charter boat. This is where, I think, things can get interesting.... good luck, flat seas & following winds

Appreciate these types of vids a lot Riley. You guys were the first sail channel I ever found and it's nice to come back and see where you're at now. This is an interesting vid - there's a lot of monohull die-hards out there. I've never sailed a cat. Couple things I could have used more info on - the safety paradox: you didn't go as deep into the pros and cons of cats vs. monohulls as I was hoping for. Also, I noticed on a recent vid that E has started experiencing seasickness. This is something I've started to struggle with too, and am worried it's going to continue to get worse and limit my ability to explore. I have heard cats are better for stability and therefore sickness, but does it really matter once you're in open ocean? Will people prone to it just be sick either way? Thanks!

Definitely a different type of video from SLV, but its good to hear this because I agree that the condomarans are getting out of control. We need more and better choices as we aren't all multi-millionaire's who can afford these things. How about a good performer without all the bells and whistles that is more affordable. I loved your idea from a previous video of a boat you can finish yourself.

Hello Riley - good on ya for giving it a go. It is a massive topic with multiple perspectives. You should have shown the Gunboat 4 fully foiling cruising cat (and the capsize video) compared to the Mooring 40 with a forward facing sliding door and the dangers of each. As with each purchase it depends on what you are buying it for. I totally agree that performance once tasted is hard to shake. Having done passages on a monohull that sails like a dead whale with stick compared to a sportboat which I own currently is hard to give up and opens new worlds. I think you could have added where the past and current La Vagabond's numbers are for perspective. Also real cost on the jump from a mass produced vessel to a more high performance vessel without showing too much bias.

Riley, I’m a budding lady sailor! Hubs and I just purchased a Leopard 46 since it seems like a good balance of performance and living space. I’ve long been an airplane and sailplane pilot, so I dig the aerodynamic/hydrodynamic discussions. I’ve been trying to hunt down the polar info for our boat to no avail. Since weather and navigation are more of my expertise, this has fallen to me to get it all figured out! I guess I’ll be making more emails and phone calls. While I commend what you were trying to do with this video, I don't think you quite achieved it if your intended audience were novice sailors. You threw several equations out but never provided example ratios both good and bad (for someone shopping for a boat). You then proceeded to talk about the case where "The boat you want isn't the boat you need" when describing a boat will all the space and accommodations for comfort is going to be contra-indicated for someone who is risk averse (more or less). You assumed that the viewer understood that the loaded comfy boat was going to be heavier with more wetted surface area, thereby providing more drag through the water, thereby increasing the loads on the rig for a given speed, thereby making for a more dangerous situation in the wrong hands, in the wrong weather. A good start, but probably left novices scratching their heads. I found myself yelling back at you"....."AND????" My suggestion would be to produce individual topics in this video into their own separate videos. The triangle you discarded at the beginning of the video isn't as irrelevant as you posit.

Keep it up, it’s the ethical thing to do, and very interesting and thought provoking. You may very well save someone’s life even if you never know it.

A very worthwhile effort Riley. I think it's difficult to really convey some of those mathematical concepts in a short format, particularly to the complete novices in your audience like myself but you did well. Enthusiasm, courage and a realistic attitude have brought you and Elajna this far. Don't abandon them.
