The Best Bike In The World? BMW GS Adventure | 40 Years

Old or new? That is the question. As the BMW GS celebrates its 40th anniversary, we grabbed the latest R 1250 GS Adventure and wheeled out Chris's trusty steed, which costs half the price - the R 1200 GSA - to see if it's worth saving £10k...

I love GS's but I don't like the fact that one is keyless.

As a GS owner I find the bikes completely overrated, especially considering the cost, and I wouldn't own one out of warranty. People love to bash KTM for quality, but considering in less than a years ownership I have already had my keyless fuel cap replaced, both my mirrors, my wireless key fob and am now looking at having the engine replaced due to the engine paint lifting I'm not impressed with BMW's quality control. I found the 1290SA to be faster, with better handling, and found it more maneuverable even at low speed, but I went with BMW for their reliability. 🤣

I'm 5ft 7, and I've been scared shitless of ever trying to get on a gs. I bloody love them, but I'm slightly too short for my bm f800st 2010... bet these bikes are lush to ride, especially in shite weather 😂😂

Man I am even happy with the older oil cooled GSA. The only thing I really envy from newer models is the smoother gear box. Mine does not have any traction control mode just the ESA which for me is the real magic. Adjusting the suspension from street to dirt is what makes the GS so cool and verstile. Not having electronics aids , wiz wheel, even cruise control can all be solved with little effort and learning the bike. Still for me the best bike I have ever owned.

I'm 59 this year and I don't look it with my helmet on. I'm going to make a couple changes. Out with the MT09 and I favour the GS. Also a name change to Cervix Ricochet, which is not that different really.

I think the new ones have too much ... forward presence? The front half looks too big relative to the rest of the bike. The previous one (wet head? 2012- ish and on) was just a tidge too big, but not obnoxious like this one. And the one before that (oil head? 2006- ish and on.) had perfect proportions.

Great video as ever. The GS really is the universal bike - I have had three of them interspersed with KTM V twins and the odd Triumph and I'm now on a 1290 SAS - Very tempted to go back to a GS for reliability and 'trustyness' but when you only have one bike its not quite enough for it to be the safe do-anything bike if it doesn't stir the emotions and make you grin when you ride it then something is wrong. I loved my GS but I am now just so hopelessly addicted to the KTMs big V twin that returning to a GS seems off the agenda, too similar to my 2016, 2017 and 2019 GSA TE's. Yes the KTM has a few issues but not enough to send me back to the Baaarp and drone of a boxer.

A very young 61 on my third GS, a 2019 1250 GSA Exclusive, it’s by far the best package on the road. Unfortunately though had a new left cylinder this year after the valves ate themselves, thank goodness it was under warranty.

As a biker who has been bikeless for the last 8 years (familial sacrifice) I will be buying the new GSA. Bikes have come a long way since I sold my 2006 K1200S which I had from new and absolutely loved. Anything remotely sporty is a total waste of time since you’re risking your life with the state of British roads and your licence with the state of speed traps. I test rode a GSA 1250, but it was last year’s spec and I thoroughly enjoyed the relaxed riding and the supreme comfort on potholed and badly broken surfaces. Adventure bikes are the only sensible option for our UK roads. I actually enjoyed the GSA, riding slowly and taking in our great British countryside. I don’t think it’s a question of age, more of mentality. If BMW updated the K1600, I’d be really tempted, but the sensible choice is the GSA.

Love the video lads! I *just* bought myself a 2014 LC with 130,000kms on it, and I'm loving it! A better choice than my R1100S in Aus, given so many of the lovely roads end up as dirt here... Question: How do you record *both* your voices so clearly? I can't figure out how to get my gf's voice on the video, when we're doing practice rides. 🤷🏻

I agree totally with what you are saying in the comparison between the 2 bikes. Ok guys cards on the table. Got into GSAs in 2006 when getting over my midlife crisis Fireblade & have had several since with a short departure to a Triumph Explorer before returning. I’m now on the 1250GSA HP. Great bike does what it says on the tin. However Head of Finance & Shoes approved me to keep my 2013 oilcooled GSA as well, by comparison this has soul & significantly more smiles per miles. It’s a keeper (like my 250LC). Don’t know what it is, whether it is the simpler level of technology or it’s just like putting on the old comfy pair of slippers but I still prefer this to my 1250 and my previous 1200 water cooled. Maybe it is newer isn’t always better. I still think the revvyer 1200 watercooled was a pitch to Sportsbike riders to draw them to the GS range, where realistically they would always be more likely to go Multistrada or KTM if they wanted a rocket ship. Thanks again keep up the great work 👍🏼

Most ridiculous piece of furniture with worst engineering EVVVVER done on any motorcycle. Absolute overpriced stupidity in square. Luckily motorcyclist ain't ride this garbage which is the only good thing about it. If they want to be green don't make them. #tipoftheday There is not a bike what falls apart as well as this car way engineered disaster like all the world lowest quality over engineered German cars. German "taste" and world lowest level "design" is another horror story in entire motorcycle industry . Everything about BMW GS is just insulting. GS is just straight forward dangerous what never shouldn't get COC there from there so many crashes and deaths with GS'ses all the time. Where very you meet GS rider on the road it's immediately like Volvo man - OK here we go we going to all die soon because of their raiding/driving skill about they surely have world highest opinion. By you can always recognize any GS owner without even asking what he rides thou fashion police highest rated suspenders give them away 100 miles. :D GS real life weight alone is one of the top biggest failure and catastrophe in entire motorcycle history as side the whole HD circus. :D Superiority on the road - is like in stupidity? Or like there is NOBODY who have less analytical thinking, worst taste and clue about motorcycles and have spend money in even more brainless way as GS owner? :D :D You have 20K and you buy GS instead KTM Adv you really need urgent medical help no questions asked.

I'm 30 sec or so into this vid and you already mention comparing a 2014 GS that you really, really, really LOVE so much that you've done an enormous mileage of 5.5k to a New one, then pointless is mentioned and i see 30 min long, so more waffle to come, so NO THANKS. How long does it take you to get it down from your mantlepiece?

Inappropriate trackday!!!!.......has got to have a 765rs to highlight just how the power, weight v's handling debate plays out, . small manageable bikes running rings aroung their bigger more powerful and much heavier counterparts has to be the most fun you can have on a trackday. gs is a great do it all road bike but they are jus too heavy...I think maybe the majority of calls into the BMW help line will be to help pick em up after a low speed topple!

268kilos. Two hundred and sixty eight. 2,6,8. That's almost 100 kilos heavier than a Gixer. And it looks top heavy. Btw the "top box" isn't a BMW invention - you have simply to add on a "rack" and fit the "top box" with "bolts". I don't get it at all. Baffled. Totally baffled. I'm 62.

Recently took a 3000k tour on a 1250 and all I thought about it is meh...worked fine, did everything ok, but failed to impress me in any way. It makes me feel bored. Shifter is sub par & inconsistent, the engine is ok but it really isn't fast when compared to other competitors. Put the luggage on & it's nearly 300kgs. Didn't love the gear ratios in the motorway either. The front t-lever makes the feedback weird (even though improved since last iterations) and hooooly s!;?-t those annoying notifications on the screen.... Personal preferences yes, I can see the appeal, but I'd never call it "the best of " anything really. That's just me though

i completely disagree ! 1. you can't and should not have compared it like this !!! the argument that the old bike is half the price doesn't stand !!! full stop how can you even say that is an old bike for fuck sake , yeah is still mighty good like all GS are even 20 year old one is still better tahn some japanees plastic thing !!! 2. I bet in 5 years time when they will come up with a new one you will say the 40 year anniversary model is better cos is half the price !!!! buuuuhhhhahhhaah 3. is not all about money , some people will still ride their old gs , and be happy and good for them very good , but some people will just get the new one cos the new one is taking things to the new level in so many fields and it's more open to a bigger audience and also more versatile !!!!

In regards to the name "GS", there is a youtube doc on the creation of the GS in which the creator is interviewed. At the time (1978) he was driving a Land Rover which inspired him to create the GS. He says GS originally stood for "Gentleman's Scrambler". It's not quite as German as one might think. I always tell my self why a 1200 gs is so expensive you don't need that much power, at that time i had a f800gt (love it) then I rent and rode a 1200 GS in a trip to italy for 1500 km. That was it for me. A year later I bought my 1200 still to young for a 1200 buy I don't care jajaja

The 1250's with a just full exhaust and a custom tune are insane. I've done 3 now. You can feel and hear the Shift Cam actuate. Also the dealer can disable the self-cancellation feature on the indicators. Except on the C650 scooter for some reason. The bike just doesn't save the update.

I started with GSA's when I was way to young by all accounts, have had seven of them now and well and truly qualify age wise to own one at this stage. Currently have a 2020 which cost me way too much to trade up to but I think well worth it in the end as so the extra oomph puts a smile on my face every time I ride it. Would slightly amend the strap line to say the GSA is "The Best All Round Bike in The World, not the best at individual or particular things but where it only one bike that has to do everything, the GSA is the one. I have all sorts of bikes, been riding for way more years than I can remember and have other bikes including sports bikes and some classics. By far the best all rounder is the GS. BTW what tyres were on the 40th Anniversary.
