The BIG Horizontal Milling Machine Project | Part 2 | Machine Teardown Time
We are continuing the BIG Horizontal Milling Machine Project! This project is converting our 2nd hand Toshiba twin pallet horizontal CNC milling machine into a manual machine. It's going to be a massive project that will take some time be sure to subscribe so you don't miss the ongoing project videos! This video is part 2 and we are tearing down and removing lots of parts off the machine that are in the way and not necessary for the finished project. We teardown all the machines guarding and doors, remove the twin pallet changer, remove the computer electronics box, remove the hydraulic system and a lot of the electronic wiring. The machine has now lost a lot of weight and looks completely different! Subscribe and stayed tuned for Part 3.

What I wonder is whether you work with others or alone other than the brilliant camera woman? We never see anyone else.... Also, keep the drive boards for the motors - I've built converted & modified a few CNCs and the drive boards are expensive or a bitch to find. Old machines like that use a 0-10v signal, so they are easy to reuse. Might have to solder some power to them if they were plugged into a backplane, but that is unusual at this high power.

Nope. I don't wonder what your doing. You got what amounts to a nice horizontal boring mill with a power rotary table for close to scrap price (probably). Makes perfect sense to me.

sometimes the audio/noise sounds a bit crazy. its weird to hear but it was the same on other accounts too. maybe its the NLcameras-internet- something which caused it.

Love where you're going with this machine. I think running DRO/PLC and power feed is a great idea. Full old CNC control would probably just get in the way of your kind of work.

Glad you find something like "a Machine" inside this giant "thing". Maintaining such a machine must be a hell of a job, but as you mentioned in part one, the reason why the previous owner sold it. Good luck on the next part of this process.

I think the axis motors are commutated by the cnc control and not by the drives which are just power to the motors? The control relies on the encoders to get the firing angle for the brushless servos. I think it if they are Mitsubishi encoders they are specific to the controller and can't be matched to an intelligent drive.

You just need TWO tools to dismantle this machine : adjustable wrenches and a Fenwick ;-) Starting weight : 18 tons. Final weight :1 1/2 ton. I wonder howold is this machine? looking at the controler ICs, I'd say 1980. Need a lot of patience to unscrew all the cables and not cutting them at once! Keep up the good work! We're looking forward to see what it looks like at the end. Congrats from France.

So I'm guessing by the direction you're going that you're obviously stripping off the stuff you don't need, and the stuff that's years out of date, in the aim of rebuilding a frankenstein machine out of the guts? I presume also therefore that you'll be upgrading the controls to something a bit newer, once you've figured out what drives what. Are the motors that do everything electronic, or hydraulic? Looks like a fun project!
