Overpopulation & Africa

Sources and further reading:
sites.google.com/view/sourcesoverpopulationandafrica
For most of our history, the human population grew slowly. Until new discoveries brought us more food and made us live longer. In just a hundred years the human population quadrupled.
This led to apocalyptic visions of an overcrowded earth. But the population growth rate actually peaked in the 1960s. Since then, fertility rates have crashed as countries industrialize and develop. World population is now expected to balance out at around 11 billion by the end of the century.
But the big picture conceals the details.
Let us look at one region in particular:
Sub-Saharan Africa. In 2019 it was home to a billion people living in 46 countries. Although its growth rate has slowed down in the last few decades, it is still much higher than in the rest of the world.
While some projections expect around 2.6 billion people others reckon with up to 5 billion by 2100.
Such growth would be a huge challenge for any society. But Sub-Saharan Africa is also the poorest region on earth.
So is Sub-Saharan Africa doomed? And why do the projections vary by 2.4 billion people?

Seriously. Why are we making videos like this? This topic was a nightmare. How do you talk about a continent as diverse as Africa, to explain larger trends? Not only is there a wide variety of sources, experts disagree with each other on what they can predict about the future. So the time we took to rewrite this script over and over was insane. Still, there is no chance this video won’t make people angry, on all sides of this issue. Some may not agree with the conclusions we have come to. Some will think there are other aspects we could and should have mentioned. Or lament that we generalized too much. But we had to generalize or this video would just have become a hour-long documentary. And we think the topic is too important to not discuss it. So we read a lot and talked too many experts with very different opinions and interpretations. Also we tried to prepare our sources in a way that walks you through our thought process and helps you to make up your own mind. This video was sponsored by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation as part of a Grant. They did not take part in the production of the video though. But this is the problem. There's more content on how people will feel about identifying cause and effect than the attrocities that continue to plague that continent with consequences far worse than words we're worried will lose a LIKE instead of a LIFE. We gotta stop this worry of words

Eeeh... I don't agree with this. Corrupt and poor Africa is a good thing for US magnates. And for Chinese also. Extracting resources at a cost of a few bribes to elite, that vastly undercut the cost of purchasing resources from an honest local company that treats workers right and pays them well is how your average Trump or Biden voter can replace everything in their house every 2 years or so. And all the talk about "poor africans boo hoo let's donate €€€ to them" is an amazing diversion to keep people from seeing the real issue - consumerism. Favor of quantity over quality in our products is reflected by the African population quite well.

@mahi tahmiddid you really just say that Korea wasn't divided as the product of colonialism? People will say anything to defend Africa when the truth is that it is the sick man continent of the world. Surviving off of foreign aid while resenting everyone who supports it.

    • mahi tahmid

      mahi tahmid

@Subo thai that's cause korea wasn't divided by the Japanese in a way that completely disregarded ethnic borders. With Africa, the Europeans didn't have a care in the world for who lived in those areas and who didn't, and drew borders to the African countries in ways that were strategic to them, not the people who lived there.Naturally, thats gonna cause tones of political instability between people that just don't want to coexist with each other, causing violence, corruption, and wars that kinda make it hard to focus on education and overpopulation. Korea simply just didnt have that problem, so it isnt really right to compare the two.

    • Subo thai

@Ano 1980 was 40 years ago. Compare that to South Korea who were subject to the most brutal colonisation imaginable by the Japanese. In 40 years post colonialism they had rebound to become one of the world's most significant economies. They may have bitter hatred for the Japanese but they didn't blame them for their problems. As for the end of apartheid in 1996 in SA, that is not where you measure the end of colonialism in SA from. That is where you measure the end of the lasting influence of colonialism which had already long since passed. And since 1996 lets look at what has happened there. And since 1980 lets look at what has happened in Zimbabwe. You can blame my education sir when you dont even know me. Or you can take a long hard look at how Africa is performing in the continent now free from colonialism. Civil wars are more common now. Genocides are more common. Corruption is more common. Coups are more common. Like a petulant teenager refusing to take responsibility for their own actions, eventually Africa will have to act like an adult and take responsibility for the mess it has itself in now. They will have a hard time blaming France, Belgium and Britain for the Chinese debt traps they so willingly walked into. Their own greed and corruption will once again threaten their sovereignty.

    • Ano

      Ano

@Subo thai Again, you clearly do not know Africa's history which is always a problem with westerners. For example, Zimbabwe got its independence 1980. South Africa 1996 etc. It hasnt been generations buddy. You have 30 year olds today that grew up in Apartheid SA. Colonisation is something that cant just be pushed to the side. If you knew more of the history then you would know that the Congo had 33% of its population wiped out by genocide from the Belgians, I can go on. As for the other issue you mentioned, yes, that is also part of the problem. But to sit there and act as if Colonisation is something that ended generations ago and something that an entire continent can just move on from is naive. Africa has a colonisation problem that is made worse by corrupt incompetent leadership who dont even want to begin solving the problems.

    • Subo thai

@Ano in 2020 the problems of Africa are Africa's alone. They rejected colonial powers who wished to interfere with their infrastructure, schooling, roads, hospitals etc in favour of Chinese investment. All China wants is to pay for land, exploit its resources and leave. But Africa is Africa and the wealth that accumulates is not distributed or invested. Most of Africa is utterly corrupt and few of its cultures revere democracy in the same way the west does. Nobody can deny the damage colonialism caused but it is 2020 now and entire generations have lived and died in independent states and watched their countries continue to descend without foreign aid from the same countries they still seek to blame for all their problems.

11 billion people projection is scary high. Biodiversity can not handle this huge imbalance since the majority of humans activities are resource intensive. The continent of Africa should not be the spotlight of overpopulation just because they are they last ones to the table of resource hogs. Hopefully humanity can find a way to decrease the human population to 5-6 billion people.

This is a very hard topic to cover , but the difference between Asia and Africa is too big to compare them. You have a hard time with agrar culture in africa , which is in fact the basic of every economy. In asia you can at least grow something. And another prblem is the pure working force. If its hot like 50C in the shadow , how can people work or learn ? And first they need , as you said , a better political stability. But this is not something you can do from within , I guess you have to build a goverment with another country , so someone extern watch the process and also to guard the democracy. The main problem is no food cause of poor agrar culture due to high temperature and no water. This is a problem , no one can fix easy.

I would love to see Ethiopia and other nations in Africa flourish the same way that South Korea did. In just a few decades, South Korea went from being one of the poorest nations on Earth to one of the wealthiest. They're on a fast track to become a world superpower. It's phenomenal to watch, and it's evidence that such rapid progress is possible in the right circumstances. I hope the right circumstances will happen for African nations, too.

Space travel is better among all the rules of increasing population. If we terraform planets, the capacity of earth will decrease. Because some people want to stay on Earth, we should let other go to Mars and beyond. But space travel is expensive, we can do it if we give ½ of the world military budget to space agencies (NASA, Europe) and private companies (example: SpaceX, Blue Origin). That's a great thing

i hope the future video on Africa has more about "post" colonialism and the effects of imperialism on Africa's nation states. i recommend reading Prisoners of Geography by Tim Marshall, there's a chapter about Africa and how colonialist divided the country up into nation states arbitrarily ignoring both the geography of the continent and the people living there already, it's fucking ridiculous (i'm sure there are better, more in depth resources about this topic from people living in Africa but i haven't read them yet) also not that i'm pro-breeding but the existence of a greater population is much less of a problem than how that population uses/wastes/depletes available resources imo

Not sure how you can blame white people on the fact that africa has civil wars and uneducated people having too much kids. Africa definitely has a significant influence on some of its major problems. You need to stop generalizing races and focus on the corporations that contribute to these issues. Not all of them are white owned. You're a racist moron.

Lets spend less time sending money to africa thats going to do little but line politicians pockets and more time building schools so we can SOME DAY impress upon those people the importance of birth control!

I honestly believe the population shall decrease in sub Saharan africa, people mostly born from 1997-2007 have began increasing the use of contraceptives and so on this clearly seen in countries mostly in West- East and Southern regions

I think it is a bit irresponsible for you to frame "overpopulation" as a problem in the first place. The earth has plenty of space for many many times the amount of people on the planet. Framing the existence of more people as a problem just seems, well, ignorant.

actually, it's easier to loot africa if they are poor. funding terrorist and disrupting a country is easier and cheaper, for other countries to steal resources than to invest in developing their country and gain something. If I am a strong country like US and UK, I will steal other resources first before using my own. Developed countries don't actually care. to make things worst, developed countries use the term "Aid" Etc to gain political favor, and make themselves the saviors.
