FAQs
Q) Hey, the HiFi Vintage website you showed states the Barclaytophone was made by Clarville in France.
A) That’s an advert from a HiFi retailer trying to sell something they know little about. They’ve got their information wrong. The Barclaytophone was made in Japan by Toshiba. Japan is printed on the back of the device and all articles from the time state this particular machine was commissioned from Toshiba, as the OEM. In the US it was sold as the Music Swinger and branded as ABC and for France it was intended to be branded as Barclay. I didn’t mention the misinformation shown in that advert to avoid confusion. Clarville don’t factor into this one at all.
Q) Could the French language have something to do with Canada?
A) Nope. Barclay were responsible for launching the Pocket Disc in France. Americom were responsible for the US - but they only got as far as Seattle & Detroit before the business closed. Toshiba were responsible for Japan. A Canada launch would likely have followed at some point - but this hadn’t been planned for at the time the operation collapsed. Canadian residents also tell me that Japanese made electronics sold in Canada traditionally have English language labelling, the same as in the US.
Q) Why are there comments from a week ago when this video has just gone live today?
A) Patrons usually have early access to videos. I'll show the first version of a video on Patreon and often the feedback I get results in a video going through further revisions to improve it. e.g. Fix audio issues, clarify points, add extra footage or cut extraneous things out. The video that goes live on youtube is the final version.

I had one of these bad boys. The one where the lid is closed to play the mini record, the needle was fixed to the roof of the lid. It's sound was comparable to putting a transistor radio inside a cookie tin. Only had 3 records, with one song, on one side each. Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass was my 'go-to' jam. Life was so simple when you're 5 years old.

Long time viewer, first comment. The french language labeling could have been targeted to affluent Vietnamese. Further the disc durability and cost would have appealed to U.S. soldiers stationed there... Sorry, more questions than answers, I'm afraid.

and as always, another truly fine video by Techmoan! and what an interesting product btw! would it be safe to say that by making something like this, the audio and music industry wanted to actually compete with the newly invented mini cassette players that this thing so closely resembles in looks, shape, size and portability? there had been many portable record players of all sizes and looks to play all record formats of for ages by then but this one looks very much like one of those Philips cassette recorder/players that came out in the early to mid 1960s, doesn't it?

Were it me, I might have tried deducing the polarity of the power jack by looking which ends of the battery compartment they were wired to. Prob with a switch-over contact there too, so 3 pins on the socket. Also looks like a standard jack socket rather than the DC barrel plug. Very annoying but common back then. The Sinclair ZX81 had a 3.5mm jack for power, the Spectrum had a barrel plug. Similarly the Atari 2600 and lots of Pong clones had a jack. Any idea why that was, anyone? The jack plug has the obvious disadvantage as a power supply of briefly shorting out the contacts as you insert the plug into the socket. Were DC barrel plugs not invented til 1982? I've never heard of alkaline batteries being wider than carbon ones. Surely they could make them literally any size they wanted? So why just-too-big? Anyway interesting so far. Dunno why they went with flexi though, those later became famous on the indie and punk scene for not even lasting as long as the bands did. And now you've got daft hipster twats today trying to re-launch cassette tape! T'ch! What's wrong with people? Bloody kids! We used them cos they were the best we could do, there's nothing better about them than tiny memory cards are, or just Bluetooth zapping a song across to a friend.

My father worked in a radio station when I was a kid, and used to occasionally bring me home some radio commercials that were recorded on a similar flexible film but they were simply cut square with the recorded track well within the square edges. They were similarly almost indestructible and although regular 45 single size, seemed to have good sound quality, probably using the platter surface as a solid backing helped. They were obviously made to play a few hundred times then go in the bin, and they would have been easy for producers to mail out being like a sheet of paper. Cheers, and thanks for another great one..

Just as a tip, techmoan, if you aren't sure of the polarity of as DC jack, use your multimeter set to continuity or resistance, and probe between the ground on the battery terminal, and the barrel jack. Further, do invest in a lab power supply, even a cheapie. If you'd like some recommendations (either you or anyone else reading this), I'll be happy for my fingers to do the walking for you, and spit out a few recommendations. Just let me know!

Another engrossing video trip down a byway of audio history! The video mentioned the brand "Americom" and I think they also released Super 8mm movies with flexidiscs containing the soundtrack? Despite the start of the disc containing the stentorian command to "start projector on tone" of course the possibility of a movie projector and a separate record player keeping any kind of sync was not possible! Thoroughly enjoy your videos and once I clamber out of this Bankruptcy I hope to support you on Patreon! Best regards Keith
