Sailing question Uma community!: Dan lowered the main and unleashed the beast that is the spinnaker. Does this create much of a nose down pitching moment with the force only being applied from beyond the front of the boat? I guess because it's so flat they can do that, but if there's a sea state I guess they can't because the bow would get really nose heavy?

If I may suggest: A 1m diameter stainless chain loop will save your stern line from chaffing on the rocks. Also a webbing loop around trees will protect the bark and the line. Love the videos. Love the synergy.

    • Sailing Uma

      Sailing Uma

      14 uur geleden

Yup. Already use a webbing loop for the trees. We slack line, rock climb and have set up hammocks for years. We know the drill. As for rocks, yes, the plan is to get something a bit more durable. Not sure it will be chain though.

Some commentators suggested mooring bow in to the shore. That’s what show-offs do, in landlocked bays, to impress guests.

    • Sailing Uma

    • Neville Cottee

      Neville Cottee

It’s unwise to moor bow to the shore anyway. If the wind shifts and there’s a bit of fetch, being stuck with the stern into waves isn’t fun.

We prefer to keep our bowsprit firmly attached to our boat, so we avoid getting it too close to rocks.

As I've seen some people comment, I'd also recommend having an aftward anchor, then your rudder doesn't snap if you accidentally lose anchor grip or are a bit to quick heading to shore. Maybe also look into getting a "Bruce" anchor, they bite on just about everything, as long as it isn't sand. Love your videos, and your interior work! Hoppas ni kommer till Sverige härnäst :-) All boats I have been aboard have had a rear "ankarbox"(swedish for anchor box- not sure about the english terminology). There you can fit 2-5 m of chain, 50 m rope and an anchor easily. Can also be good to have a backup anchor if the chain has a hidden defect. Travel safe!

You are lucky to have each other and share the same passion. When it comes to ferries in Norway, the government is trying to improve this. The tunnel in the area you are now in this film is already under construction: nlcameras.info/wiki/gXm5XX6s2Ha8roY/video Also, if you like mountains that rise straight up from the sea, I hope you have made the trip to the fjords in Møre og Romsdal or deep in Sognefjorden or in the Lyngen mountains in Troms, then you can sail into the root of 6-7000ft mountains.

R U Kidding? Death trap 13:06! Never use a line that floats or tied to shore because if a hummm kid or anyone in a hummm fast or even slow dinghy or any prop boat AT NIGHT runs over your line they may KILL themselves and ruin their boat. Use a stern ANCHOR and ANCHOR LINE. PLEASE!!! We love ya kids but please use your brains and common sense.

    • Sailing Uma

      Sailing Uma

      Dag geleden

Lol. Thanks for sharing your opinion about something you're clearly misinformed about. Stern lines are common place here in Northern waters and people know how to avoid them with proper etiquette. One boat per bay. And no one lets their kids go high speed joy riding in a powerboat at night. If you see a boat anchored in a small bay, it's assumed they're using stern lines and all other boats avoid them. Besides, we're often the only boat we see for days and usually have the entire place to ourselves.

21:45 - The music is in the same key as the shock cords!!! Okay, so maybe not. Nice to see the trials of anchoring (and using stern lines) which is very practical for all of us. Dan and Kika, can you guys compare your Rocna to a Mantus? Haven't actually used either one, my last anchor purchase was a Fortress for a small boat where weight and size was a big issue. Thanks!

    • Sailing Uma

      Sailing Uma

      Dag geleden

Rocna at Mantus will set and function exactly the same. Each will fit a bit differently on the bow, so it's worth looking into both. We like the simplicity of the welded rocna vs the bolted together mantus. But the mantus makes for a great 2nd or stern anchor since it can be stored flat.

Rosalie and I have been together 50 plus years and from the time I was in the army and still to this day keep on the move. We did a little sailing but we tend to get seasick. The sailing channel Sailing into Freedom has been ( episode 265 and 266) playing a song called sailing to Freedom that I wrote, play and sing for them. Check it out. Yes. But not without a genset. You can’t really afford to be becalmed there for weeks at a time... Who knows though. Maybe one day.

You might have to do it Skip Novac style with 4 big pools of line going to shore like a spider web. That's what he does at the south end of Chile and Drakes passage.

don't try to trick people into thinking they're special to be among the few to get that free trial. EVERYONE gets it. In fact it's illegal in several countries to make such fake claims!

A good sailor can sail in a storm...but the best sailors don’t.

please do not tie boat to a tree without protection. rope leaves scars on the bark that may kill the tree. Soft and thin bark on trees like pines, spruce, birch, or aspens are especially prone to bark damage from ropes.

I keep checking in when I can and today I realised how far Kika has come with her sailing prowess and confidence, must have something to do with having a supportive teacher 😎

Kika knows how to sail just as much as I do. She just usually is the one holding the camera filming...

It was a fantastic advertisement you made for skillshare, I almost thought you were professionals I'm a little curious, I can figure out that the video you just posted on NLcameras was recorded a while ago, when you say that it's light until 9 o'clock, and the weather also seems a bit summery, I think you are 3-4 weeks behind with to upload videos, ?? not because it matters I was just curious ;-) where will you spend the winter,? in Norway or sailing south before it gets cold, I know it can get very cold in Norway in the winter -20 degrees cencius is not completely abnormal, Maybe it was an idea to sail down to Denmark, down here it will not be nearly as cold, Thanks for some great videos, follow you faithfully every week, Thousand thanks for sharing your exciting everyday life with us.
