When Time Became History - The Human Era

** UPDATE: Calendars are sold out on the US-Shop but you can still get them from the EU-shop: shop-eu.kurzgesagt.org/ **
For the fifth time, we present to you the Human Era Calendar for the year 12,021 - this time it is all about the journey of humanity, beginning tens of thousands of years ago, leading into the revolution of agriculture, to ancient high civilizations and the beginning of modern times, culminating in a vision for our future. You can get the limited Edition now until we sell out and then never again. As always the calendar features 12 illustrated pages printed on high quality paper in Europe and the US. And this year the cover is especially shiny. The calendar will look great on your wall and let you dream about a glorious future. We truly have come far as a species!

This video is completely wrong and unscientific right from the first 35 seconds. 1. The longer humans live, the less children they have. Our population will not grow that much more. 2. On top of this, humans will not become an interplanetary species. We will eventually force evolution on ourselves with things like genetic engineering, biomechatronics, neural networks etc. Creating a new species beyond homosapien that can actually learn more and do more as well as live far longer. Humans will begin to go into decline and we will likely become bear extinct at some point. This new super human will be leaps and bounds ahead of us technologically and we will be left in the wind. Like an animal on the side of the road. We'll see the advanced world around us. But we won't comprehend most of it.

*As a Harvard Neuroscientist, the wonders and achievements of the human mind are built upon abstractions of the sensory-motor interface, of which language has been the most foundational. I'll elaborate on that later but, first, let's take a trip back in evolutionary history.* Much of the evolutionarily older parts of our brain - aside from dealing with homeostatic control of internal states (e.g. heart rate, respiration, satiety, digestion, wake-sleep, hormonal flux) - are explicitly wired to receive real-time sensory inputs and transform them into adaptive motor outputs. Even invertebrates, such as worms and insects, have nervous systems that exquisitely fulfill these critical tasks. For vertebrates like us, our spinal cord, hindbrain, and midbrain are largely dedicated to these real-time sensorimotor transformations, in addition to autonomically regulating our internal states. This comprises much of the brains and functionalities of simpler vertebrates, such as fish and reptiles. The advent of mammals brought about an expansion of subcortex conferring more complex emotionality in the service of caregiving, and a cerebral cortex for more flexible learning & strategizing for solving problems. Our cats and dogs, of course, are endowed with these capacities. But even they lack the formidable human capacity to abstract and transcend the sensorimotor interface. Language is our most foundational abstraction of the sensorimotor landscape. We look at an object and associate it with an arbitrary label - a word - and construct arbitrary vocalizations and other abstract motor outputs (writing symbols and letters) in relation to the sensory stimulus (the physical object). In so doing, we are able to take these associations - words with objects - and build more and more associations upon them to make sense of the world. We first dichotomize the world of word-objects into big/small, light/dark, fast/slow, and good/bad. From there, we can categorize the constellation of word-objects into convenient bins for comparisons and interactions. Beyond space, we can perform the same abstraction with time by categorizing it, binning it, and even discretizing it into infinitesimal points in the service of calculus and elaborately precise computations. In so doing, we can make accurate predictions of the future for many purposes. Speaking of the future, and also the past, our ability to think outside of our current physical space and time is another key ingredient to our dominance over the rest of the animal kingdom. But all these human-specific wonders of our minds often go awry and undermine our optimal functionality. Yes, our cerebral endowments of hindsight and foresight expand our cognitive landscapes beyond the linear sensory-motor interface known as the present. But this often makes the present elusive, yet all the more vital to embrace. Otherwise, we're just living in the memories of our future selves. Consider getting present to the moment more often, which is still possible even if you need to reflect on the past or plan for the future. Do those activities in the present as well. It's where all your power lies. Vids coming soon.

No one will read my comment, but still: Why? why do we keep working for the future? why do we do what we do? why do we even work for our survival? WHAT'S THE POINT OF IT ALL? so far nothing, no answer, we're just born into a world with no answers to critical question. People often question religion and get a vague answer, and question the meaning of existence and receive a vague answer. It feels as if humans are living in a petri dish or a terrarium, we are limited by our world perception that we cant perceive anything beyond it. A scary thought comes to mind, if I were a character in an advanced simulation made especially for me, how would I know? and even if I know, what do I do with this information? is there even a point in asking these questions? if there is no point to my curious question, then there is no point in doing anything. I often try and ponder these questions with family and friends, but they either make fun of me or avoid engaging in conversation, I don't think they understand my thought process, and I dont blame them. Loneliness is a harsh mistress, and pain is it's only companion. Thank you for reading, that is if anyone read my comment.

@friendly911 No we'll definitely never know the answers. Our ancestors couldn't possibly have understood that cultivating wild wheat would lead to smart phones and youtube. Trying to understand a leap forward of that magnitude is hopeless, but if those ancestors had thought "what's the point, why bother?" then we wouldn't be having this conversation. Just keep bothering, maybe you'll play a part in something just as amazing.

    • Run Beach Run

      Run Beach Run

      2 dagen geleden

I read it! Here's my take- if you're a character in an advanced simulation, who cares? Someone put you there on purpose which means you have a purpose. But personally I think that's basically impossible, if there was a civilisation advanced enough to keep you in a simulation as believable as what we call reality then I think they'd be advanced enough to make sure you didn't question it somehow. It comes back to the old adage- you know you're not crazy if you think you might be crazy, because crazy people actually have no idea they're crazy. And if you're not in a simulation the answer is even simpler, your purpose (and mine) is most likely to be a part of the human race. I like to think our purpose as a species is so far off into the future we can't possibly grasp it yet, maybe we're the most advanced lifeform in the universe, maybe we're the only life form that will ever travel through space. If that's the case then without us the entirety of space potentially has no purpose. Maybe our role in this is to give the universe meaning. So basically, you're not wasting your life if you don't achieve something memorable (by human standards anyway), as a whole we are slowly but (almost) surely achieving something extraordinary, maybe something that has never been done before and will never be done again. And we need everyone to play their part, even if it's just looking out for the person next door, because you never know who that person is, what they might be able to do or who they're looking out for. I asked myself the same questions you asked, and that's what I came up with.

@Elfos64 Seeing as you don't seem to understand English I really don't know why I'm replying to you. Anyways no one cares what you "often say". 1, Because it's a stupid quote. And 2, because no one knows who you are, you could literally say you like pizza and it would have the same effect.

Humanity needs to figure out a way to preserve our history in a way that future generations can just look at and know exactly what was going on, and i needs to be able to last literally thousands of years in storage

Hmmm, this is a nice story, but it is also one of domination and violence. Agriculture as a choice involved making oneself vulnerable to predation, as you were storing large amounts of food, maturing at the same time, in the same place all year round and had to stay there. This led to the apparition of the first states - extorsion rackets led by a well-armed gang, which expanded by wars and slave expeditions, and legitimized themselves through these few texts we have remaining. I highly recommend James C. Scott's "The Art of Not Being Governed" as a great book on this from the perspective of South-East Asia.

Hmm, our ancestors most likely needed to grow barley to get their alcohol fix! Oldest tracks of cereals are barley and that makes much more sense to imagine they could have settle for that rather than harvesting food they could find more easily in their environment. Basically, beer is the beginning of civilization.
