Formula One Champion Lewis Hamilton in conversation with Gayle King

With four world titles under his belt, defending Formula One world champion Lewis Hamilton is the first and only black driver in F1 history and the most successful British driver in the sport.
A true multi-hyphenate, Hamilton is a talented musician, artist, and endless enthusiast of extreme sports. As global ambassador of Tommy Hilfiger, Lewis recently debuted his first men’s capsule collection, Tommy X Lewis, mixing sportswear and streetwear motifs with the brand’s iconic color blocking and logo.
Moderated by Gayle King, this is an intimate look into the unprecedented achievements and career highlights of Lewis Hamilton.

Lewis Hamilton is a proven driver. When it rains he is still the best driver on the track. However, you can't deny that his team has the best engineers in the world and the team principal is the best. So, Mercedes is generally an accomplished team who rarely make mistakes. Oh yes, we mustn't forget the nearly half a billion they invest. Lewis is an excellent driver but it takes more than driving excellence to win record numbers of championships.

How can she say that there isn't any kind of diversity in F1, when the sport is global and drivers come from all over the world? We've had drivers coming from every single continent! We've had drivers from India, Japan, South Africa, South America (so many from Brazil!), Mexico, Russia, Thailand, etc. Where is "diversity" lacking here??? Yes, the majority of people in the sport are white European males, but do you know why? Because the sport originated in Europe, where the vast majority of men are white. And male! Lewis is successful and he made it into Formula 1 because he demonstrated talent, interest, and because his father worked hard to help him start his career. Eventually Lewis was backed by McLaren and progressed in the junior series until getting a Formula 1 drive in 2007. He was phenomenal in F1 from the first corner of the first race, and he kept performing at the top. He wasn't backed by McLaren for being black or for any other reason other than talent and potential. Equally, he wasn't discriminated for being black, otherwise he wouldn't have been where he is. So, if people feel that Formula 1 is "too white" and lacking "diversity", maybe, just maybe, consider inspiring more black fathers to follow the example of Anthony Hamilton.

    • Andre F. S.

      Andre F. S.

      16 dagen geleden

@Beverley Knight-Davis What makes you think that "I fail to understand" what it means to be different? Stop for a minute to examine what is at the core of discrimination. It's being different. Societies always tend to favour what is common and familiar to them, and they always hesitate towards what is different, especially what is different culturally. That's normal. That's a defense mechanism built-in during thousands of years of evolution. Black people today are not discriminated because they have more melanin. They are sometimes discriminated because their skin colour presents them as being culturally "different", and people discriminate what is different, out of fear or ignorance. So, as you might have guessed, facing such difficulties is not exclusive to the Hamilton family. It is not exclusive to black people. It is in fact very common in the world: obese people face barriers; ugly people face barriers; foreigners face barriers; poor people face barriers; the list goes on. What made the Hamiltons successful was to have had the right attitude and the right values, to be able to face adversity and work hard. Crossing their arms blaming discrimination would have got them nowhere. Victimising themselves would have got them nowhere. Instead, they did the right thing, making themselves a living example to show the world, and black communities in particular, 1) the value of having a father, 2) the value of hard work, 3) the value of embracing and facing adversity without playing victimhood. And all of that paid off, because his father faced adversities to provide Lewis with the opportunity, and Lewis absorbed that hardworking and diligent mentality for his own development, which made him successful enough to be spotted by his sponsors. It's all about culture. Lewis is a living example showing that F1 is not racist at all, and very much performance-driven. Otherwise, he wouldn't have been given an opportunity. The fact that he's the only (half-)black driver in the history of the sport has little to do with racial discrimination, and more to do with the cultural heritage of the sport on the one hand, and to the high financial cost of motorsport on the other hand. Europe is rich, Europe is predominantly white, and Europe is the birthplace of motorsport, so it is not a surprise to see mostly wealthy white people in this career. It's a completely different story at the NBA, and nobody complains about it.

That's because you fail to understand what he and his dad had to endure when he was growing up. He's the only black driver. Nick Lada was my early idol and I yearned to see someone like me in a F1 car in those days. I'm 65 and thank God Lewis has pave the way for others like him_ despite the rejection and obstacles they came up against. But I'm hopeful because there are a lot of William Wilberforce out there. Peace and love forever.

I’m a big Lewis fan but can’t except he’s the greatest driver as for years he’s only been in a two car Mercedes world championship .. we all know that no one in f1 is going to win the driver’s title unless they’re in a Mercedes which makes it a two car world championship, it’s like me racing my brother in a 100 mtr sprint with me in spikes and my brother in clogs then jumping up and down spraying champagne claiming I’m the best in the world every time I win...

    • Mark Wesley

      Mark Wesley

      19 dagen geleden

@Andy Glastonbury ou don’t have to worry about disappointing me as a couple of messages back I totally agreed with you about Lewis thinking he was the goat, I’m glad you agree you have to be in a Mercedes to win the championship which like I said only makes it a two car championship which doesn’t look good on Hamilton’s cv, as for Russel your missing one humongous point..if it wasn’t for a puncture he would of won and with the right size seat and the right size boots and more time in the car only a mad man would think he wouldn’t of improved as the season moved on, he climbed out of the worst car on the grid and jumped into to best car on the grid an bar a puncture would of one, again doesn’t look good on Hamilton’s cv does it..although Hamilton had already won the championship and fresh out of covid he wasn’t keen on Russel jumping in his car a second time was he......

    • Andy Glastonbury

      Andy Glastonbury

      19 dagen geleden

@Mark WesleyJust a couple of points. First Lewis has not, and is never likely to claim he is the GOAT. Sorry to disappoint. Secondly, I very much LeClerc, Max, Vettel, Danny R would agree with you that you have to drive a Mercedes in order to win, especially given that in 12 months time everyone will be looking forward to new regs and new cars, and according to Ross Brawn and much more level playing field. As for Russell, he performed very well, but still finished 9. But only a lunatic would use one performance on a single track to attempt to predict what he might achieve over 20 odd tracks throughout the course of a season. I have very high hopes for Russell in 2022,(he has the pedigree) but that’s all it is. As for the rest of it, it’s nothing more than an opinion.

    • Mark Wesley

      Mark Wesley

      19 dagen geleden

@Andy Glastonbury You’ve slightly driven of track slightly my original quote was you can’t claim Lewis is the goat when he drives a Mercedes..again ‘everyone’ on that starting grid knows they are never going to be world champion until they get in a merc , no one in sport no matter what the sport can claim they are better than anyone else when they have an unfair advantage over everyone else .. Mercedes deserve all they get but sadly not the chap who’s doing steering , anyone of the drivers could do that Russel has proven that perfectly and I’m certainly not someone who is always whining about Hamilton always winning I think Mercedes thoroughly deserve all they get just not the driver as I’ve said, as for ‘what ifs’ that’s what sport is all about ‘what if’ the best taking on the best..that is sport and why we all love sport that’s why I would love to see verstappen and leclerc in the same team or verstappen and Hamilton in the same team no matter what the sport boxing ,tennis etc we all want to see the best take on the best and on a level playing field that’s the whole point of sport and why we all love it so much, I think we’re going to have to agree to disagree on this one lol

    • Andy Glastonbury

      Andy Glastonbury

      19 dagen geleden

@Mark Wesley. Hamilton tested positive on the Monday, Van Doone was told to join the team, but I have little doubt that Russell was told he would get the gig, assuming Williams agreed to release him, which they did, thus still had the benefit of P1-3 and Q1-3 prior to the race (unlike Hulk did). But you are right Hamilton/Mercedes are going through that period when “fans” are whinging about the dominance of a team (except of course the Tifosi who never complain providing the car is Ferrari or the driver Italian 😂. Which is perhaps why I prefer to focus on the track, the racing and the resulting drama, rather than playing the “what if” game. For example what if Montoya had stayed at McLaren (then Hamilton might not have even got his seat), what if Schumy had stayed one more season at Mercedes (then Hamilton might not got the drive) and so on. Life’s to complicated as it is 😀. Hence I like to focus on the facts as they stand without the “what ifs”. Lewis drives for Mercedes and wins a lot, Bottas drives a Mercedes and doesn’t win as much = Lewis is better than Bottas 😂 Mercedes wins the WCC = it’s better than RBR, Ferrari, etc. As for Max vs Lewis, a comparison is too difficult because Max started in F1 5 years before Hamilton did, Hamilton is now 12 years older, Max is taller, Max the benefit of an ex-F1 driver as his dad, Max didn’t complete in GP2, etc, etc. So the only real and factual comparison that can be made is number of wins, poles, fastest laps, crashes, etc. One comparison is perhaps to compare the respective performance of Max (aged 23) and Hamilton (aged 23). Max achieved 2 wins and 11 podiums, Hamilton (aged 23) achieved 4 wins and 12 podiums, so on paper Lewis was better, but actually it does really prove anything. Even if Max was put in the same car as Hamilton, it still wouldn’t prove anything because some would claim one or the other would have a better garage, better strategy, better driving style for that track, better conditions for qualifying, better treatment from the stewards, etc, etc plus Hamilton will always have had more experience. So utterly pointless even considering it. The real problem however seems to be the “fans” who simply lack the brain power to actually realise this. 😂🤣

@Andy Glastonbury Your quite right about Hamilton claiming he’s the goat he would never say that it’s the general feeling of various tv pundits I’ve watched, Hamilton is going through the same kind of period as vettel and red bull did and Schumacher and Ferrari before that although I’ll give Schumacher and Ferrari the win over Hamilton because there was less drivers aids in Schumachers day, I’ve just looked up how much notice Russel got it was 48hrs and 64 phone calls and even had to wear smaller boots..amazing, since 2014 Mercedes have won I think roughly 102-105 races in second place is red bull on 17 ish so a bloody incredible job by Mercedes, I think you have to agree at this moment in time no one is going to beat Mercedes so to me it’s a two car championship.. the big question for me is..who would be world champion if verstappen and Hamilton both drove for Mercedes!!!

@Dark Matter Well I personally would not crédit a product. to any other entiity other than the 0riginal producers of the product there are a lot of British origin products in the world being credited to other nations the "Pendolino" ,train is a good example the technology is British the train is Italian.

    • Dark Matter

@MusicLover So I guess the question is what makes a product British or German? If it is made in Germany but owned by the Chinese, is it now a Chinese product or still a German one? EDIT: to rephrase a question. What is a truer reflection of the nationality of a product...the nationality of who owns it or the nationality of where and who makes it?

    • MusicLover

      MusicLover

@Dark Matter aah but now its British isnt it since they relabled the cars. If the new owners keep the original product name then a Porsche is a porsche and we all know its German.

      Dark Matter

@MusicLover Agreed but what would happen in this hypothetical situation: McLaren cars buys Porsche and relabelled Porsche cars as McLaren. What would the new, renamed Porsches be... a British product or a German product?

Let's talk about being outpointed by Button from 2010-2012. Let's talk about getting whipped by Kimi and Alonso in 2012/2013. Let's talk about the easiest pitlane on the F1 calendar in Shanghai. Oh you don't want to? Ok bye.

    • Andy Glastonbury

Happy to. 1) Actually it was Hamilton who out pointed Button in 2010 and 2012. Jenson beat Hamilton in 2011. 2) During 2012/13 Alonso/Kimi (neither of which managed to win a WDC that year) were driving for Ferrari, but just like Hamilton were beaten by Vettel in the Redbull As for Shanghai 2007, both Bridgestone and Hamilton wanted to pit for new tyres because of tire degradation. McLaren decided to leave him out. The time time McLaren called him in his tyres had turned to slicks, which in the wet made it impossible to steer the car, especially on the “green” pit entry. Hence he simply slid off and unfortunately beached in the gravel. It was not driver error, it was a team error, and it cost him a rookie WDC. Next?

Lewis is a phenomenal driver and an even more impressive human being, as admitted by the interview host too. Having followed him since 2012 season, (I got to know about the sport of F1 that year as I watched the documentary of Senna and because Lewis' racing style was similar to Senna, and Lewis himself idolised Senna too, I started following him), his personal growth as a human being is as impressive as his racing achievements, if not more, since then. I have learnt so much by watching all his interviews, press conferences and his BBC columns that he used to write before, instagram stories etc on what sort of personality he is, be it on his approach towards life in general, social justice, environmental justice etc and continues to inspire... And currently he is one of the very few leading sportspersons to use his position (as the face of F1, which is hard-earned, coming from a humble background with an amazing dad) to voice out for so many social issues in the world. His growth in this aspect is tremendous, especially in the last two years or so, and I hope he continues to use his position which is followed by world of Formula One (with many corporations and important political leaders involved) and so many others listen to. As he says in this 2018 interview, he wants to make a real impact in the world and evidently so, he is currently on the right track. Champion on track and more importantly, champion off-track!!!

I see Lewis as a person, and not as a "black" person. There are people who see him this way, but not every one. So I hate it when Cayle, and I love her in other interviews, always go in that direction. Like because there is no diversity, everybody want to make it extra hard for you, when you're having a darker color. I hate the term "black" anyway🤮 ... Nobody is black or white

No no not true. We are all different shades of colours, race, gender etc. Why did they treat those slaves the way they did. Why did that white policeman used his knees to kill Mr Floyde. Its because he was a Black man. That's why BLM. It's not a bad thing to be different colours. I'm Black. I love that. I love my white, Brown friends. I love humans of different colours. So we are different races of different colours. We are all Bless to be part of the human race of Black, White, Brown people. Love it. One love.

I would put Lewis 2nd behind Jim Clarke for the same reason that Stewart mentioned. Remember that Schumacher's success was littered with cheating, both personally and through the corrupt Italian teams he drove for. Like Schumacker Lewis has become unpopular, but due to his activities outside F1 and like with Schumacker F1 has become boring. But then F1 has been boring for some time, bring back the Hunt/Lauda and Prost/Mansell/Senna days.
