SNS 326: Stoker Engine Clean Up & Test Fit, Indicating Square Stock, Work Boot Repair

In this episode I'll get the stoker engine cleaned up from all of the surface rust that's accumulated on it then get it inside the shop and test fit it on the newly machined fixture plate in the G&E shaper. Also there's some simple machining footage from the week, indicating square stock in the 4 jaw chuck. Lastly, I show my current work boots and how I am collaborating with @Trenton & Heath Trent Potter offered to repair them for me so we take a look at their current condition before the refurbish.

For shoes to wear evenly you need orthotics only properly fit by a podiatrist doctor. You need a good foundation to support your huge body. I’am bigger than you 420# 6’4” been wearing them for years will make shoes wear evenly.

I came to your channel after seeing Trenton & Heath repair your boots. You are a fine teacher. I was going to school to become a machinist and then the doctors disabled me because of complications of a head and neck injury suffered in a head-on collision. I tried working with the machines I had but had to throw in the towel when I lost so much hand strength I could no longer safely do things. I still love machine work and always enjoy seeing a good teacher sharing their craft.

Adam - don't worry about the exterior appearance of the stoker - rust is as clean as it will ever be on the locomotive, it more likely will be encased in oil, grease and coal dust. I only worked on the railroad for over 50 years.

    • mmi16

It is a accessory on the railroad steam locomotive to move fuel (coal) from the tender to the firebox of the locomotive - it is powered by steam that the locomotive generates. This is a part of the restoration of NC&St.L engine 576. Steam engines such as the 576 require more fuel to be delivered to the firebox than a human being is physically able to supply with a shovel.

Good idea on the square stock. I need to find an inside attachment, used of course. I hope everything works out with that weld job on the engine, although it would be interesting to see what ideas you'd have to fix it another way. Those soles are worn, how many years have you been wearing those boots? Keep us updated on that, it'll be cool to see how they turn out.

I used to work in broadcast TV years ago on the engineering end as well as production and I know a good writer/producer/director of documentary style videos when I see one. You have the skills of a professional. You understand the fundamental concepts of human interest, storyboard continuity, camera work, narration, post production, editing, music, time lapse and technical quality. In short, you could work in the business of documentary video production if given the opportunity. You are that good. Your openings, main subject continuity, closings and attention to detail are the best I have seen on NLcameras in a long time. Your shot angles and placement of the cameras is perfect in that they provide a very important element when telling a story using video...perspective. The close-ups are downright mesmerizing. I too, like thousands of others, am addicted to your videos and check my email everyday for another upload. Good job, Adam..!

Being in Construction for 25 years I have always appreciated the skill of machinists have. I love how with some of the work they do there is more work in the set up than the actual machining. My fear is, like the construction industry, the people with the skills necessary to do quality work are slowly disappearing. We need young people to realize the value of carrying on these skills and how important it is to always have people who can do these things. Thanks Abom for what you do.

On my small bandsaw it also has a movable jaw . I did use odd blocks to balance out the jaw on short work. I then got the idea to drill and tap a 1/4"-20 hole in the movable jaw on the side opposite the saw blade. I cut a piece of 1/4" allthread and jammed a hand knod on one end. I screw that in the 1/4" taped hole. I use the screw to balance out jaw. Works perfect . May not work on your saw .

Large is approx inch or more thick for spring. The mini is put on vans type shoes still I think but those aren’t any good. They are shaped like shark teeth. It’s like having shocks on your feet. Every step you take feels like you stepped on a pillow instead of concrete. Definitely beneficial for anyone who stands on concrete all day. Vibram ripple sole is had to find now but absolutely worth the search. Hey use to put them on military boots as stock soles on certain styles. Best boots for comfort ever.

Gabriel Romero sand blasting is great, but it has two problems; making sure you removed all the sand, the last thing you want is sand to escape from some nook and get in a bearing. Second, fresh blasted surfaces are very chemically active so will corrode even faster. It's not for just the aesthetics that Rolls Royce paint the inside of all their castings. Can also ensure that any sand that got missed in the first place gets trapped and it makes it a lot easier to clean too.

Please take the time to use your slings and eye bolts correctly. I see many people using that triangle arrangement when lifting and it is very dangerous, if the load is not balanced it will flip, also you are subjecting the eye bolts to shear loads across the threaded area (side load), not how they are supposed to be used.

One would have to wonder what you were thinking leaving a rare and priceless stoker engine case sitting outside in the rain to rust up? Looks like Rucker is going to have a lot more hours invested to clean up rust on machined surfaces and evaporusting (again) plus scrubbing black oxide off of every surface. SMFH, it makes no sense.

@Brian Streufert Ahh.. the unintentionally lazy “lazy” canard straight out of corporate management’s playbook. lol. I’m not arguing that unions are perfect or in some cases haven’t settled into a kind of institutional malaise. But I don’t want my boots made by *your children* or pieceworkers making the equivalent of 79 cents an hour and having to work a 20 hour day to be able to afford to eat. You guys are all like “buy USA” (and I agree) but then are happy to have an increasingly underpaid group of workers make your stuff. The only reason there even is an american middle class, with money to buy great boots, is because of organized labor.

@Pia Vig Dalsgaard I don't think Adam is worried about that. He tore down, cleaned, and rebuilt the thing, and got it up and running after years of it sitting in a dusty rusty garage. No big deal. nlcameras.info/wiki/r5rQhoeL0p3TlXo/video

@kemc77 . . . jep I know they can. It's an absolute no go. If I was his daddy I would pull him in his ears. My master in the shop would have done the same little Gooby. So pls... Stop cutting and grinding near American Machine art like that beautifull shaper.

Start watching at 7:25. See the corners of that square block of metal? Now hear them hitting the cutting tool? How hard do they strike the tool? I am *certain* it is with more than 500 lbs of force. Well more. The tool holder can easily hold the Sky Hook which has a 500 lb weight limit. It should be clear that the tool holder was designed to withstand forces well in excess of 500 lbs. Adam could chuck up a square block 12 inches across, which would hit the cutting tool with high force.

True but do not think that only those corners are hitting hard the cutting tool, immagine how much force can strike the cutting tool when turning some heavy chips like we see in this channel, so that sky hook is more likely a slap on the wrist or tweaking a cheek

I love indicating, and setups videos. It's what got me hooked on Abomb's channel years ago. I'm not a machinist or fabricator, it looks like magic to a layperson like me.

I've never used the CRC Knock'er Loose, but I have used Kroil a lot. Always works on the cruddiest parts.

Thanks for sharing with us Adam, hope everything goes well with your machining, looks good so far. Can’t wait to see your boots after reconditioning. Hard to find the boots you need for foot comfort.👍👍👍👍👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
