    Do not use this brand for beans! This brand has lard in it. Just cook your own beans with oil. Use some cerrano chilis and onion in oil. Then stick your beans in it and add salt.

    Hey Julien, there are already tamales that don’t use meat, with only a simple green or red sauce. There are also sweet tamales, that usually have fruit inside and have cajeta (you can use vegan dulce de leche) on the outside . 🤩

    As an 18 year old Latina who is also trying to learn how to make traditional Mexican meals I am incredibly PROUD of you!! I can personally tell you making these meals can be extremely intimidating (especially try to roll out the perfect tortilla de harina).     Anyone else out there with Exocrine Pancreatic Insufficiency(EPI) crying bc this looks so amazing but you know that even with your replacement enzymes the amount of corn products in these would wreck your stomach?😭 Or is it just me? I’ve wondered if others with EPI have as much problems with corn products as me? Whole corn totally wrecks my entire GI system for days. But even things like cornmeal in cornbread or in fish batter will hurt me if I eat much of it. Just curious. I’ve noticed with EPI eating more on the vegetarian side helps a lot. But a lot of vegetarian replacement recipes call for corn based products.😕 And is many Mexican dishes...especially like this one...there is just NO WAY to make them with even limiting the amount of corn. Which sucks bc before EPI Mexican food was my favorite! And I wrecked my GI system several times right after my EPI began before figuring out that no amount of replacement enzymes will allow me to safely eat it. 😢😢😢

    That’s pretty good for a first time! It takes a lot of work and sometimes more than one person to make tamales and that’s one of the reasons why they’re usually made during holidays like Christmas. One thing that we do when we make them (mostly me cause I never wrap them tight enough) is rip off thin strips of the corn husks and tie them so they don’t fall apart when they’re cooking. And it’s also kinda cute lol. But anyways great job!!

    Don't feel bad, Julien. As someone who grew up making tamales, I felt almost defeated every time. We tend to make them in massive batches where they last for a week or more. It's time consuming, meticulous, would be an all day venture. But the reward is worth it. If you ever want lessons on assembling them, let us know. Your fans are more than happy to help!

    he did a great job i just died laughing when he put them beans in lol julien you but the filling in the middle of masa and also you spread out the masa all over the corn husk so its butter stuff all over corn husk then masa everywhere then filling and then close it up no extra masa you did a great job tho for your first time

    My mom usually uses the sink to soak the corn husks ik it’s been 5 months also don’t worry some just make the tamales plain and use the masa for babies or just for kids that don’t like spicy stuff

    As a Mexican I'm so proud of you Julian ❤️ doing so great my guy . . . A point for next time is soak the husks overnight before making masa for the tamales. Also there's masa that comes frozen and you just add lard and broth to it and mix! Makes your life a bit easier. My famila spreads the masa all over the husks so the masa wraps around the cheese and beans inside.

    I helped my mom make these every weekend when she sold them and i enjoyed it every time lol. And also these are made different in every state of mexico so its okay if its not made exactly the same as how one persons family cooks them:)

    I’m Mexican and we only make tamales on special occasions so we make like 50 or more. We make verdes, rojos, and sweet tamales so many different kinds. It is such a hard process from start to finish. I’m so exhausted by the end. I appreciate how respectful you were while making this video. I definitely want to give your recipe a try.

    My grand mama is from El Salvador and she makes amazing tamales and pupusas but GOOOOOD LUCK trying to get her to tell you her secrets. You'd have to pry the recipes out of her cold dead hands!! These look tasty so they'll do for now ;)

    tips for the future: the masa should be spread pretty thin, not too thin bc they it can break when you fold it but definitely shouldn’t be thick. thick masa will mean it takes forever too cook, and when you bite into it the tamale will be nothing but a glob of masa in your mouth (not very delicious). second thing about the masa is that it should take up enough of the corn husk that the filling is encased entirely by the masa. an unwrapped tamale should never show it’s filling. also, I would recommend doing a chicken tamale in the future, even if it’s an imitation chicken because a) I think chicken tamales taste the best, and b) you can then create the sauce from scratch, very similar to the adobo sauce from the posole video, that really allows you to control the flavors and make the best tasting tamales ever!

    Great video Julien you really nailed it, the texture for the tamales was on point, don’t worry people really struggle with tamales, specially during Christmas Three suggestions/ notes if you ever do this again: If a corn husk breaks apart, you can use the scraps for tying your tamales together, which helps them retain their form and cook in a more even way -You can try making Tamales de Rajas, which is shredded Jalapeño( for heat) or Poblano pepper( for mild yet Smokey flavor) with cheese, or you can try making something like Mushroom Tamales with cheese, which is similar to the Huitlacoche Tamales, there are even sweet Tamales like sweet corn, pineapple and strawberry, go crazy! - the beans can be both just added to the tamales or they can even be mixed into the masa, that way the texture of the tamales will be the same but with the taste of beans

    what you can do for the next you make them is to use your tortilla maker and then lay the masa on the husk and then put the filling inside. Roll both sides inward then fold the top over and lay them face down so it doesn't unravel. Usually my family only makes them once a year and there is an assembly line lol.

    TIP FOR NEXT TIME >>> Julien you should try "chile verde tamales"... Instead of putting refried beans you roast anaheim peppers (california chiles, green chiles - not poblano) in the flame of the stove, de-vein them, remove the seeds (don't wash them) and add more cheese. My mom loves them! They come out SO GOOD when the chiles are spicy. You can also put carrot, brocoli and other veggies inside... My favs are with chicken and green tomatillo salsa. (you can use a substitute of course). BTW: Thank you for respecting our culture, you are invited to our fiestas any time!

    I make rice and faux cheese for my daughter who can not have corn or flour. no milk ect.... Julien need more fat and water and yes on having warm water. Put the masa over the edges been in the center and fold over so the beans are in side. Go to Views on the road on youtube!!!!

    When I have extra Masa I would make the plain tamales and it's my favorite part too. I love it. I think you did great for your first time. When you don't have enough space with one corn husk, you can add a little bit of Masa to one side and paste another husk on top to make a larger piece. It makes it easier to add more Masa when you want to cover your filling completely. I really like watching you make this, you did great.

      One more thing, :) if your tamale seems a little unstable. The smaller husk you can pull them apart thinner and tie two thin pieces together to make a cord. With that, you can tie a tamale up to secure the husk so it won't fall apart. I hope you keep making tamales. It's nice to see in the comments so many people are offering you advice and encouragement.

    I enjoyed watching you make these... it’s a daunting undertaking. ideas for your future batches. Add a bit of the Chile sauce to the masa for another layer of flavor and you can do a refried beans with soyrizo for the filling (with or without cheese). Happy cooking!
