Hi Matt, you could ride longer, this would bring your seat forward a little, so he can carry over his front legs, free his spine up, and he'd be better able to use his hind legs, get more elevation and impulsion. Have a look at some of the top riders and horses, very, very long. Lightens up the horse no end. Engine is in the back, drive shaft has no visible means of support. This is not intended as a criticism, you are a very beautiful rider and Emporio is doing well. Its not a matter of too short, but could you possibly go longer?

Your young horse did really well with your mixed messages & signals. When he tried to do his extended trot it looked like you were afraid of gaining speed, kept the reins super tight - yet complained that you wish he was faster. Same with his canter, he was willing to give you a collected canter but you held him back to the point that he was almost hopping??? Do you trust him? He's a gorgeous boy & will be a great dressage horse one day. Maybe watch some Warwick Schiller videos ( only from the last 2 years when he worked on himself) - about Trust Building, being a good 'leader' for your horse & ground work before you get on! I think you'll really like his perspective... which is really looking at things from a horse's perspective.

In our actual training level dressage tests the serptentine is referred to as "One loop". Broken line term interesting. Training levet test 3 in USDF introduces loops, which demonstrates the progress horse and rider are making in developing correct bending. in the loops, we want to see a correct bend in the corner; then as the horse approaches the quarter line, the rider should straighten the horse and at X start bending in the direction of the loop. The rider should carry that bend to the next quarter line, where she would again straighten the horse and then bend him in the direction of the corner. Done correctly, with balance and impulsion, the loop perfectly situates the horse to flow into the canter, which is the next movement of the test.

Cant help but noticing that you're sitting in the wrong part of the saddle, at all times. It would be a lot more settling for the horse if you weren't bouncing off the cantle in a forward position. This is easily fixed. You need to go back to riding without stirrups for a few months, or if you never did when learning to ride out in Australia now is the time to think like a German. Return to that frequently again until your seat both in rising and sitting trot is established, yes without stirrups, even without a saddle. That way you wouldn't rely on them so much. l know you need a rising trot here but your stirrup/leg length is still off for dressage, just too short, also making you rise too high. This is fine for a very young horse freshly under saddle......You have nice long legs, relax and use them. He has to get used to legs on without exploding and you can only do that if you sit in the deepest part of the saddle with your legs independent from your seat. Same time you might like to check that your saddle isn't too small for you. Once thats sorted he will go so much more relaxed and stronger from behind, you cant expect too much power there yet but you seat can improve that enormously. I know this is at home in a quite environment he knows extremely well and he knows he isn't going anywhere, but still his walk has improved hugely and is probably the best it's going to get so dont fiddle too much with it, it will improve in length by itself as he gets more suppleness. Otherwise not bad lol. PS- think its time you took him home he's begining to lose that spark in the eye.

    1. There is always a broken line from your elbow to the bit - puts him behind the bit. 2. When posting you are working too hard and not allowing his movement to move you with no effort on your part. 3. You are always looking down and not at eye level; how can you expect the horse to be in balance if you are not? And you’ll never ride a straight line if you don’t look where you’re going. 4. Can’t tell absolutely from the video but appears you are pushing him into your hand and consequently having to hold with the hand. Your arms, from finger tips to the shoulder blades, belong to the horse. You must feel the horse with your body, not watch him with your eyes. If you allow the movement to come through it is easy to modulate; if you try to “push” him him into the hand he will become heavy. If you are light and in perfect balance, so will he be as well. N.B.: The horse IS the mirror of the rider. Look in a mirror to find the answers...

Wow, really amazing horse, but sorry to say, I guess he has a problem with his left hindleg. You can already see that the hip movement is disturbed and possibly due to this his collection (or already weight loading) is not as good as it should be. I really recommend to have an eye on it or to see an veterinarian that is experienced with hindleg problems and biomechanical aspects of esp. dressage riding as well as chiropractic/osteopathic treatment. All the best, keep fingers crossed!

I'm curious if anyone else thinks Matt's saddle is too small for for him? I have thought this in other videos, and in this video I found myself focusing on it rather than the horse. It's like it doesn't fit his thigh, and puts his seat too far back towards in the saddle...especially obvious in trot? I didn't notice it with Chase, but then it has been awhile since I watched any of their rides together. I've seen lots of tall long legged riders on PRE's. Makes me think of tall people fitting into a small sports car, it works, but the seat (saddle) has to work for them. I don't know, I think just lengthening the stirrup wouldn't change anything. I could be way wrong, but the saddle just looks like it doesn't fit Matt. I rode in quite a few Giacomini saddles, the stirrup bar was set further back than a lot of saddles at that time ( a few years before Matt was even born). It allowed for a longer open thigh no matter what one's leg length was, kept one's seat over your leg, and in the lowest part of the saddle. Again, curious what others think here, including you Matt:) Thanks for sharing Emporio...he is beautiful.

@Inkainu it is costly to need a different saddle for different horses , and then a size that fits the rider as well. I looked at some photos and videos of other respected male riders , they didn't seem to have the chair seat. I re -watched when Jesse rode Emporio a couple months ago, I am assuming in the same saddle Matt uses, and he "lands" in the deeper part of the seat, before the upward curve of the cantle starts. The chair seat makes the "up" of the posting/rising trot so high, and then the landing back down kinda far back on the horse. I also watched Susan E Harris and Peggy Brown's "Visible Horse" and Visible Rider" videos, where the rider has bones painted on a black outfit, and the horse's anatomy is painted on the horse. Pretty cool.. That would be a good video for them to try

    • Inkainu

      Inkainu

      5 dagen geleden

Yes, the saddle looks like it doesn't fit him. Imo. Lengthening the stirrups probably wouldn't work either as you pointed out, the stirrup bar is likely too far forward on that saddle. Leaving him in a chair seat, or really having to struggle against getting pushed into a chair seat. I honestly think Matt's seat has been getting worse and worse, and I would not be surprised if the saddle is at fault! It very often is truth be told.

You mentioned he was funny on the left rein. If you watch the footage back you'll see that he is paddling with that nearside fore which is a sign of lameness. Have your farrier check that he is balanced correctly first and foremost. I am a trimmer myself and noticed it straight away but wasn't going to comment til you mentioned he felt off on the left rein. Worth checking if you read this!

    • Suzanne

I also noticed that slightly but never noticed it before. Some horses naturally paddle and there is nothing wrong with them. There is a famous US racehorse named Vekoma who paddles and is one of the top horses in the US right now. Seabiscuit paddled his entire life. I think it is just Emporio's way of moving. I don't think he is lame and his paddle is slight. I have read a lot of horses do it because they put so much movement into their stride that the energy takes it outward. Emporio moves so outstandingly every stride I think it is just his impulsion carrying through from back to front which he also makes look effortless at the same time. I guess it wouldn't hurt to ask a vet but I know of so many horses that paddle and do fine in their careers it is just the way God made them. Do agree always make sure their hooves are balanced.

"broken line" is a single serpentine. In German it's called that as well: einfache Schlangenlinie.

    • Bibi Boom

      Bibi Boom

      4 dagen geleden

@TheBierschorle I googled the einfache Schlangenlinie just now and I see what you mean. That is a exactly what Matt did, but that is not an existing exercise in Dutch dressage that I know of. A broken line is not curved like the einfache Schlangenlinie.

    • TheBierschorle

      TheBierschorle

      4 dagen geleden

@Bibi Boom half circle is, at least in Germany, something completely different to the shown "broken line". The thing that resembles the broken line is a "einfache Schlangenlinie" witch literally translates to "single serpentine" (one could add "on the long side" but this is normally not done)

    • Bibi Boom

      Bibi Boom

      5 dagen geleden

Actually, that is a normal broken line. In the test it is a broken line 5 meters, which is only half as wide. So you start at M, ride in a straight line towards A, but when you hit the B-E line you make a sharp turn back to F.

    • Bibi Boom

      Bibi Boom

      5 dagen geleden

No, it isn't. I think you're confusing it with the half circles. In a broken line you ride straight over the diagonal, making a sharp turn into at X to the next corner, so you end up in the same direction as you started. There aren't any curves in a broken line, only sharp angels.

Don't be to hard on yourself in this level dressage it's more then enough. We always want to do better but that's why we train. It's a very common thing to do not as good in a (practice) test then in training. That's why it's so important to train different exercises after each other and not just one by one. As said before I rode here in ozzy with an australian fei rider and she calls broken line a loop or small loop. It's a build up to a serpentine and you will use it later to start your counter canter. I really like how you reflect back on yourself and want to het the best out of your horses and always in an honest way. I agree with a lot of people that I like the hands a little bit lower but here in Ozzy I got thought as well to carry them more and keep the nose high and especially with horses as emporio and sureno, they will have the tendency to hide and go to round. Just watch some dutch competitions on the level that your gonna compete and see there results then you see against what you are competing and you will see that you will just do fine and grow in the higher work. Your ready. Veel geluk

It’s soo funny seeing you struggle with the “broken lines” Because in Austria they are called “einfache/doppelte Schlangenlinien” and “Schlangenlinien in 3 Bögen”. Translated it would mean “simple/double snakelines” and “snakelines in 3 curves”. Its something you learn pretty soon after you are allowed of the lounge😂 And I think those half circles were just circle changings (“Tournwechsel” in Austria and “aus dem Zirkel wechseln” in Germany) But you did a good job. 😊👍🏻

I love that everywhere else has proper names for this like in the UK its just called a 5 metre loop.Even the half circles are just called half 20 or 10 metre circles 😬😂

In dutch you have “Schlangenlinien in 3/4 Bögen” too! It's "slangevolte met 3/4 bogen", the pictures on google are the same :) . Broken lines are meant to be have sharper turns. You are rigth about the "halve voltes" that's "aus dem Zirkel wechseln"

Eyo German here. First thing i learned as soon as i was off the lounge, was 4 and 3 „Schlangenlienien durch die Bahn“ i think thats kind off a shared thing between riding instructors 😂😂😂😂

The only problem is that you ride this test in an arena that is 20 meters to big in length. It makes the exercises longer and during actual competitions, you have to ride this test in a 40x20 m arena. My tip would be practicing this test in a 40x20 m arena. It makes it easier for you and Emporio. And normally you cannot talk during you test lol but its okay Matt. Just keep on practicing!

Well... Jesse speaks English with him all the time at home. No pain, no gain. If Jesse switched back to Dutch he'd have to learn.

You should never practice a test on a horse, they learn to anticipate the next move, so gotta know all the moves but not what is coming. To learn a test, do it on paper or with a stick in the earth, it is always logical, winds up one way and unwinds the other. Good luck with it. Wasn't a priority with me either, but if a test was on at a show or gymkhana, I'd ride it on my galloway hack, and often win, having learned it with a stick, drawing the pattern. Learning A B etc is not as logical. In Holland they call for you. I like that video tracker, what next? Brilliant. Greetings from Australia. Emporio is gorgeous, well done.

I agree, my horse would anticipate the test and think, it's happening soon, and become a little flustered. I preferred to train using transitions and do a test at home only sometimes so I knew it. Also I found training my horse in a paddock or field can help as there are no boundaries of the dressage arena as good for the extended trot to go further and stronger to achieve and show the horse exactly what you are looking for. Once he achieves or shows something of what you are looking for, tell him so he knows, tell him how wonderful he is and then rest and end that lesson with a walk. Well done Matt I love your videos and thank you.

Matt, you are so hard on yourself! The tracking camera thing is pretty cool, but obvs it's better to have Jesse recording. Emporio is a beautiful horse! 🥰

The Pivo can never replace Jesse, especially his little laughs and comments. So I guess for us who do not have Jesse, we can get the Pivo instead.
