Very interesting!! The owner would have some difficulty accessing his property if the lock picking was botched, I guess smashing a window or blowing a wall out becomes necessary. I learned a tiny bit of picking when I was younger, just playing with a simple padlock, and 30 some odd years later it came in handy for something at work. A very basic key switch that my boss did not have the key for, I told him to give me a couple minutes and I defeated it. Got some eyebrows raised at me, but the satisfaction was worth it.

How about using a comb lifting pick to lift all the pins as high as they will go then drill the chambers out in the cylinder then use a screwdriver to force the plug around

    12 uur geleden

Ok, so, what about using this locks notoriety to trap experienced lockpickers intentionally. For instance, switching up the arrangement so that it alternated between the wafer being hollow and the upper pin being hollow? Seems like it would add a lot more difficulty, especially with only one chance to pick it. it could be any combination of first sheerline/second sheerline and you would only know after testing it whether you got it right.

I would consider this sort of lock on a room with high value items. Although you would have to drill out the locking mechanism and possibly ruin the lock and be forced to replace or repair it, there is the added benefit that you will know instantly that someone attempted to pick their way in.

That was a pretty ingenious cylinder mechanism. My improvement: use 10 pins, and pick three, four, or five at random to get the second shear line "trap" treatment shown here. That way, for any given lock, even LPL wouldn't be able to tell which pins to push into the second position to avoid the trap. How many different possible cylinders would there be? My combinatorics is rusty... EDIT: hmm, I'm probably showing my ignorance of key locks, but why not ditch the trap mechanism (to avoid DOS attacks), and instead have each pin be able to "click" into several different positions only one of which is the right one. The result would be a key lock that had a bunch of different "combinations" of pin positions to have try during picking, only one of which would open the lock.

Can you un-trap the trap pins by applying some tension to the cylinder and sharply tapping the entire lock body? I figure it should be possible to bump the hollow pins out of those grooves. Yes it would require removing the body from a door or whatever first, but it should be a non-destructive technique to recover the lock.

I've "saved" one of these before...you just remove the strip that holds in the springs and flip the mechanism over. The springs and key pins then fall "shoot" out. Then you just re-insert the springs and pins back into place in their proper order and replace the band and just "stake" it back into place.

So you could make this same lock, with the safety measure on all 5 pins, also with some of the lock traps on the 2nd line so it just becomes a guessing game for the picker on which ones to go to the 1st and which ones go to the 2nd.
