She's served her ban, and unless she tests positive again she deserves more credit for what she is achieving. She's not enough of a science genius to be systematically taking smart substances designed to evade the tests. She doesn't earn enough to afford to dope on that level of sophistication. And the stakes aren't high enough for her team to organise that for her, because this is just cyclocross, not the Tour de France. Anyway, is there even a drug available that could deliver her the distance she won by in the World Cup? This is a highly technical sport, and there's certainly no drug that can provide you with the handling skills needed to excel in it.

There are plenty of great technical riders who lack the power to compete at the top end of the sport. Otherwise, mountain bikers would come in and dominate.

@valleyflaneur They would be two years late in discussing her doping sentence (that's pretty old news), so the only really current story is her perception in the women's field.

@Dave Messenheimer A clear explanation of the offences is possible, even if the cases are complicated. You're right to point out the difficulty, but what's the alternative? If you avoid the main issue just because it's complicated then you wind up talking about the less important secondary issues like twitter following without talking about what matters most.

a "clear explanation" when it comes to doping cases isn't possible. That's one of the reason they are controversial. Athletes know that supplement contamination is on them, as it's spelled out in WADA's rules. Many feel that she should have at least had the full minimum doping sentence. This is literally in a WADA "youth quiz": "Question: How can you tell if nutritional supplements are safe to use? a. All nutritional supplements are safe to use b. You cannot tell if nutritional supplements are safe to use c. If the label says that they are safe d. If the doctor gave it to you Answer: b. You cannot tell if nutritional supplements are safe to use Explanation: The supplement industry is not regulated and therefore you cannot be certain what substances/ingredients are in a supplement. Using supplements is always at your own risk. If the claims on the packaging sound too good to be true - it probably contains a substance prohibited in sport!" www.wada-ama.org/sites/default/files/resources/files/yq_english.pdf

Any even vague analysis of Betsemas changed body type and hard to believe improvements in a short time should have been at least sceptical. She has a great back story - in many ways seems an admirable young woman - and she should have been a real asset to CX - but once you get your ‘supplements’ from a Belgian pharmacist - SIS, High5, Clif, etc anyone?- then you can’t expect much sympathy. Haters below should check out cyclings doping history, why would anyone get a Belgian Pharmacist to manufacture a supplement, research fat burning/ muscle building/ training effects of steroids and keep in mind Chris Boardmans axiom - in sport if it looks too good to be true - it probably is. PS Doesn’t help she was totally unapologetic and has never explained herself. PPS No surprise she had an unopened batch of her ‘supplement’. PPS She’s entitled to ride and none of her peers should be less than civil ( Fans are entitled to an opinion) PPS If she wins worlds then it will just be that Valverde feeling when an unapologetic convicted doper wins and all you’re waiting for is for a year to pass and them not wear the journey. With that COME ON Primetime (see CX Hairs) COME ON LUCINDA

I understand that and I am not arguing that she shouldn't be punished but in her case there are mitigating circumstances: -She is a relative newbie as a pro-sporter. -She lives off-road so to speak (an island up north) and trains mostly on her own and was not well advised by her team imo (they backed her all the way which is not evident these days). -imo there is no doubt that the supplier screwed up. I know that there a suppliers who guarantee 100% "save products" (extra cleaning vats and all) and I know that Sanne Cant uses them, but I think her team should have been more responsible in this. So there you go. It's not up to WADA to babysit sporters, in the end of the day sporters are responsible for what they take and they definitely should punish Betsema. I just believe in leniency and think she is already punished enough and people should move on, but that's just my opinion. Whatever that opinion is, base it on facts/research (one becomes cynical these days).
Dave Messenheimer
19 uur geleden
@mwodan But you understand that WADA specifically says that athletes are responsible for their own supplements, right? And that is there to avoid the "my supplement was tainted" excuse. My biggest issue is that she should have gotten the full length ban (4 years). As an athlete, when in doubt, you just should opt not to take the "supplement".
mwodan
Dag geleden
1: Basing your opinions on "vague analysis" sums up your attitude. 2: "Supplements" is just additional special food, generally used by pro-sporters. By your definition you can consider ALL food to be doping. 3: re: "Belgian pharmacist bullshit": whatever 4: Boardman has a point of course but it is not unusual in a small sport for a talent to get tot the top quickly. 5: "Betsema BS": she explained herself at length and the unopened supplement came from the pharmacist not her. I don't care for Betsema (she could be doped to the brim for all I know) and have no patience for dopers in general but in her case there is enough evidence that she is a victim of a contaminated supplement (...but YOU know all about HATERS who think... etc. don't you?).

Before she got banned she wasn't at top of the sport, there were about 5 riders that were still ahead of her and she wasn't winning everything and the races she did win are similar to races that she is winning at the moment. Also her riding style hasn't changed because If she was doing before and after you would have seen some sort of change in how she races.

Common get over it: it was not a straight up doping case, in all likelihood an inadvertent ingestion of tainted supplements, the case was duly processed by the UCI etc and resolved and has served her time (lost just about a season), she has now recovered and doing well, very well, she has been up there the whole season, with some excellent racing and sportswomenship. You are way off the mark, not sure what Mollly hang up really is but I for one cant watch her going off like this, its really baseless, hurtful, judgemental and in bad taste, and doing your brand no good.

Have you watched the podium body language when she’s on the podium, looks like everyone on the podium is happy to be next to her. As an American who loves bike racing and understands there is more dipping in NFL and MLB I say call out those ppl too, if your not going to then please zip it pal.

Do you think changing bike to Cervelo (because that's what he is riding on right now, right?) is making any difference for van Aert?

I would love my favourite Annemarie Worst to win. I would be made up but I think Lucinda Brand will win. Denise Betsema has been going well this season, she could also win

Why are you discounting Alvarado?

@cx34r Ironically, democrats are big-government-is-our-savior (and mainly responsible for the division over the past decade or so), so maybe get a clue before you try to sound like you have one. So she did well in one race.....the rest have been subpar compared to her last season where she would drop everyone with relative ease.

@Dana Rouleau Typical ignorant fascist can't take a joke, always making everything about division. Perhaps you didn't see Baal just 12 days ago.

@Emperor of the north & No.#19 Train Typical ignorant democrat, always making everything about race. Perhaps it's because Alvarado hasn't done much for weeks now compared to last year where she dominated, and Brand/Betsema have been pushing the pace at the front most of this season?

seeing Rory Sutherland here and in the World Tour makes me miss the Nature Valley Grand Prix- North Star Grand Prix in MN even more. Thinking about the talent we used to see on their way up is incredible. Just a few years ago we had Brandon McNulty racing here. And some years before that Rory winning it all here. Now because of a garbage racing scene in the US and MN we have no race. Sad, Stillwater used to be my fathers day celebration w my wife and kids. Boooooooo

it should be like in Soccer - when you have a contract, another team can only buy you free from that contract.

How are we measuring this? Based on talent and potential, or based on palmares? Based on potential and versatility, Alaphilippe is pretty incredible. Based on palmares, Gilbert has collected an impressive number of big wins and is the closest person since De Vlaemink and Merckx to win all five monuments.

I know "woulda" and "coulda" don't count, but WOW did he come close to asserting himself not only as the best classics rider in the world last year, but as having had one the great years ever. He lost one monument by a foot, gave away another he had clearly won, and then had a nearly inexplicable crash in a race he was absolutely in contention for. So all that separated him from historic glory was a few inches in two races and a freak crash in another. Obviously he did NOT win those races, so mostly that's that. But I think it is worth arguing that he is good enough -- and rode well enough -- to have won all of them, and if he had, we would be having a very different discussion. A similar "woulda/coulda" argument can be made for WVA. Likely would have won Flanders had he started his sprint a few meters earlier, and rode well enough at the worlds to have won both events in almost any other year. But a road course that suited Alaphilippe perfectly and the arrival of who may turn out to be one of the greatest TT guys of all time kept him in second, and he lost at least one TDF sprint after being nearly knocked off his bike by Sagan. Again, he didn't win any of those, but he was strong enough to have done so under even slightly different circumstances. So I rate those two, along with Hirschi, MVDP, Pogacar, Evenepoel, and Roglic as the best classics riders in the world right now. Who wins any particular race just depends on the course and the legs that day.

I had this bike for one month. Used to stand up in corners and go wide. Horrendous descender. This crash exactly as mine rode. Amazing no one has been killed on one. The revised geometry doesn't work.
